Just got back from the movie theatre, where I saw "Kung Fu Hustle"--I was very pleased. Some familiar names and faces were involved with this very bizarre and crazy film. Anyone else seen this yet?

i hope it does well, but i really don't have any desire to see it. no "real" kung fu, like Jackie used so well and humorously, but a bunch of added cg effects don't make me want to see it- i mean, i can watch CITY HUNTER and realize that Stephen Chow is just adding those pretty effects to silly humor. guess watching these movies over a long period of time makes one a bit "been there, seen that". well, ME anyway! it's the same way i felt with HERO and HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS- didn't i see these done as SWORDSMAN, BUTTERFLY AND SWORD or MOON WARRIORS? I want to, and I think it being over the top is the intent. It isn't played as a serious Kung Fu flick and is kind of a toungue and cheek homage to the chop sockey set and was played strictly for laughs.

Yes, over the top it is. Despite the focus on humor, it is pretty relentless, and has a serious enough side. Here's what I saw in the theatre: The first half of the movie had the small audience (matinee hours) laughing intermittently and tittering--a good response for ten or fifteen people.
After they had been through the first hour, and realized that it was going to go on for ANOTHER hour, at that pace, without stopping, the audience just sat there in stunned silence. Not a laugh, not a word, and it wasn't because they were bored, it was because they had underestimated just how crazy it was going to be. From where I was sitting, it delivered.

oh, i understand it's a comedy, and an over the top one. i just like seeing more physical humor (like Chaplin or the Stooges or Jackie Chan) that relies on real physical attributes instead of the cg silliness.
but perhaps i will see it as well, it could be fun.
