i'd like to see the Shaolin movies. there's a reason that none of the mainland Chinese movies show hung gar, choy li fut or true kung fu- most of those patriots fought against the communists and the ones that left for Hong Kong (or other places) survived, while the ones that didn't leave usually didn't live.
then, in the 50s or so, China realized kung fu was a national heritage, and had people design wushu to be the national martial art of China.
it looks real pretty, and there's no denying the athletes are talented, but it is NOT a battle tested martial art like what Wong Fei-hung or Fong Sai-yuk did. or even Kwan Tak-hing!
i'm also sure the movie producers were told not to use any other style of martial art. can't have the locals shown up!
of course, when Lau Kar Leong made Shaolin Temple 3 with Jet Li, he did make it look a lot more "real" which makes that one my fave.
good reviews!

Well, the second Shaolin movie does feature some mantis style and some pa kua (one of the three Chinese internal styles which has a long history I think). But most of it is your usual mainland movie wushu (which is still loads of fun to watch).
