Night Creatures (1962) aka Captain Clegg
Peter Cushing - Rev. Dr. Blyss (Captain Clegg) Yvonne Romain - Imogene Clegg (serving wench) Patrick Allen - Captain Collier Oliver Reed - Harry Cobtree Michael Ripper - Jeremiah Mipps (coffinmaker) Martin Benson - Mr. Rash (innkeeper) David Lodge - Navy bos'un Derek Francis - Squire Anthony Cobtree Daphne Anderson - Mrs. Rash Milton Reid - The Mulatto Jack MacGowran - Frightened Man Terry Scully - Sailor Dick Tate Sydney Bromley - Old Tom Ketch Peter Halliday - Sailor Jack Pott Rupert Osborn - Gerry Gordon Rollings - Wurzel Bob Head - Peg-Leg Colin Douglas - Pirate bos'un
Based on Russell Thorndike's Dr. Syn novel. According to the IMdb a Disney lawsuit caused Dr. Syn to become Dr. Blyss and changed The Scarecrow from the main character to a supporting character.
I haven't seen the Disney movie but I have read a book based on it. I like the story in the book better than this film. The leader of the smuglers is mysterious in the book. Only his two assistants know who he actually is. And being a Disney story, less violent. And the book has a happier ending. I didn't care for that Captain Clegg bit. The leader being the Scarecrow is much more interesting.
Night Creatures is included in the The Hammer Horror Series DVD set.

I like both versions. I have the Hammer set and it gave me a chance to finally see NIGHT CREATURES. Disney's THE SCARECROW OF ROMNEY MARSH came out in 1964. Last time I saw that version was in a theater around 1975. It's got my man Patrick McGoohan in the lead and you know I really liked that! He had a great, scary howling laugh as the scarecrow. Wish that version would come to DVD.

At the drsyn website there is a movie file of the Disney 3 minute 8mm film (Dr Syn, Alias The Scarecrow). It made me realize that I'd probably seen the movie or miniseries on TV before. I always thought that what I had seen was Dark Night of the Scarecrow, but I think that's a completely different movie now which I've probably never seen. I found the 1937 movie in a DVD 3 pack along with THE BAT and KING OF THE ZOMBIES. I guess it's OOP but found it on ebay for a couple of bucks. From what I've read, NIGHT CREATURES is basically a remake of the 1937 movie and not a reinterpritation of the book. I think I'll plunk down the money for the Hammer Horror package that has it in there, since I don't have any of the other movies either. Also found the Disney movie on ioffer.com for pretty cheap. Since Diz never put it out on DVD it'll probably just be VHS quality, but that's just the way it goes. Can you tell this has piqued my interest? haha

I think we can works something out! OK, so obsessive compulsive that I am, I've listened to the first of the original books, watched Night Creatures and the 1937 Dr Syn. So far the 1937 movie is the best of the bunch. I'll watch the Disney one when I get a chance and then compare all three, plus the book.

Dave I totally spaced on getting the Disney Scarecrow to you, ya just gotta remind me about these things! But here's some good news: www.ultimatedisney.com/treasures.htmlComing out November 11, 2008"Dr Syn, Alias the Scarecrow," which first aired as three separate episodes on Disney’s weekly TV show under the title "The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh," was edited for theatrical releases in England and the U.S. This DVD set includes all three of the original TV episodes plus the theatrical version of the film that was released in England.
