In the comics how does Captain Marvel compare to Superman?

about the same. Captain Marvel's powers are magic based, which would seem to give him an edge, but they have about the same powers. i don't think Cap (the big RED cheese) has the super (or MARVELous) hearing or eye powers that Supes does, but then, he can't be hurt by kryptonite.
Chris, got anything more to add?
other than the 946 different Captain Marvels in the world.

Keep in mind that Superman ALWAYS has his powers[with the exception of being exposed to Kryptonite]while Captain Marvel is vulnerable in his Billy Batson persona and can only gain access to his powers by yelling SHAZZAM!!! which turns him into Gomer Pyle.

Seems like the Captain Marvel of "Kingdom Come" had the ability to kick the poo out of anyone including Superman, given the right type of mind control. Torgaman, I should have seen that joke coming, but you caught me by surprise and about spewed coffee out my nose.

Captain Marvel is the world's mightiest mortal , which is why he beat the snot out of Supes in KINGDOM COME. Alex Ross' take on the characters then and now is that the Captain has greater physichal stregth. Frankly though, i think all things being considered, even with Marvel being stronger muscle-wise, Supes is all around the stronger of the two as he has more abilities, and Marvel is indeed completely vunerable as Billy Batson. Still, I'd love to see a one shot comic with them going toe to toe.

There has been a quite a few throw down slobberknockers between the two. My favorite was All Star Squadron 36-7. Cap was under the control of Hitler whom had the Spear of Destiny. Superman persued Marvel into territory protected by the magic of the spear. Adhering to Supes being succeptable to magic as a weakness, Marvel beat the ever living tar out of Supes. Kind of appropriate considering at one point Marvel was out selling Supes. members.tripod.com/originalvigilante/captainthunder/img012.jpg [/img] This was the first taste anyone had of Superman vs. Captain Marvel. supermanhomepage.com/images/comic-covers/Pre-Crisis-Covers/1974/adv276s-tb.JPG [/img] This is from Superman 276. It features him taking on what appears to be Capatin Marvel. Turns out he is taking on a guy named Captain Thunder. I always enjoyed this as Marvel's name was originally supposed to be Capatin Thunder but Fawcett publications could not secure a copy right as the name was already taken. Captain Thunder's alter ego is Willie Fawcett which is obviously an homage to the original publishers of Captain Marvel.

I do believe Superman has an advantage over Marvel because even as Marvel he still retains the brain of a teenager.Superman is older, wiser and more experienced than Billy Batson and can use that against him.
