For the few on here who aren't in opposition to Transformers... Well, those of you who aren't probably know all this already, but I figure I might as well share the fruits of my research
As character designs go, the latest incarnation of Transformers, Energon, for the most part sucks AND blows. When left to their own devices, their designs are abysmal. However, there are a handful of really quite good figures. I suppose it is no accident that these figures are homages to the original Transformers, including a whack of ones based on the movie characters!
The whole thing got started with the Unicron from the previous incarnation, Armada. Finally! (unfortunately it was way too expensive for me to justify buying... bleh!)
It goes on though! There's a new Rodimus that looks amazing, and an original Arcee (she was made once before as a BotCon exclusive repaint of Black Arachnia from Beast Wars). There is also a new Megatron that looks unmistakably like Galvatron, but I'm saving my money for the actual proper Galvatron coming out next month. Yes, I did indeed already get Rodimus and Arcee
Also coming out is, finally, a Quintesson figure, though I'm a little unsure about him. From the cartoon he looks alright, but the toy doesn't look enough like a movie Quintesson to justify it to me, necessarily. And for the dinobot fans, there are new versions of Grimlock and Swoop that look and even transform almost exactly like their originals!
In Energon, there's more than a few that are general homages, including Omega Supreme, a retread of Wheeljack named "Downshift", the original Jetfire named "Skyblast" and Shockwave renamed "Shockblast". There are also, naturally, a lot of characters that reuse names: Cliffjumper, Starscream, etc. and so on.
But also, in case anyone is keeping up on the comics, the newest Transformers in Japan, Cybertron, has a beautiful Starscream that looks just like the version from The War Within.
So, er, yeah... Groovy. And hey, here's a Transformers movie site: www.transformersthemovie.com/
