Fairly recent Gigantor series

Well, technically it's Tetsujin 28, but I can't help but call him Gigantor. I'm more familiar with that name.
Has anyone seen this show? It came out sometime last year. It's quite good, though fairly dark in some parts - there's alot of emphasis on Gigantor's original purpose as a weapon. He even goes on a Godzilla-like rampage early on in the show, and it's a while before Shotaro realises having a giant robot is a pretty cool thing. It's quite similar to the Giant Robo cartoon from a few years back, but with more action and plenty of monsters.
I don't know if it'll ever show up in the west, as there's a fair few WW2 references in the show, most characters have ties to the war, and alot of the monsters were created as part of weapons programs and the like, same as Tetsujin.
Still, it's a cool cartoon, and worth checking out.

Oh, and Jimmy still gets to drive a car too.

it seems like i've heard about this one, but never seen it. i liked the color Gigantor that was on Sci-Fi in the mid 90s (i had all 51 episodes taped, but now only have the first 5 and last 6). that one was done by Fred Ladd, so it still had the same names and everything.
i'd like to see this one, as long as it's not deadly dull like that Giant Robo cartoon.

I remember that one - that was the first version of Gigantor I saw. Still had the cool theme song and all. The new show does have its' sombre moments, but not at the expense of the action. Gigantor gets to kick butt in most of the eps I've seen. But it's not as upbeat as the original show. It's definitely played straight.
I just finished watching the classic show earlier. Now that one's a lot of fun. Those dvd sets are great.

I found this video clip of the opening titles for the original Tetsujin cartoon, along with the '80s version and the later FX show. The original's still the best, IMO.

I got the second set of dvds earlier this week, and I'm working my way through the last 13 episodes. There's alot of fun stuff here, and a few twists as well. Lots of villains popping up and a fair few familiar robots too. There are some slow episodes where Gigantor doesn't do much, but the story's pretty interesting, and things do pick up in the latest eps I've seen. There's some cool stuff involving a whole army of Black Ox robots, and an odd revelation involving Tetsujin himself. I won't go into any details here, in case you want to check out the show.
By the way Megs, if you're still interested in seeing it, I have a spare copy of the first 13 eps. When I got the 2nd set, I had to grab both volumes as they were being sold together. So now I have two copies of the first set.
And wouldn't ya know it, Ebay's full of vol 2 sets now.

Watched the last ep tonight. Gosh, the ending wasn't what I espected at all, and a little sad too.That's all I'm sayin', though - don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet. Overall, the show is alot of fun, though there are shades of the Giant Robo cartoon in there, like I mentioned before. Not surprising, since both cartoons were directed by the same guy. Yasuhiro Imagawa, I think.
