For some reason I had never heard of this amazing bit of footage.  If you haven't either you can read about its history here.In short, in 1936 Bob Clampett wanted to do an ERB John Carter cartoon serial for MGM. ERB was totally into it and they did sculptures , story boards and even some test footage. Of course the marketing people at MGM balked because it was too weird for them. As someone who has worked in entertainment for quite a long time now, I can without a doubt tell you that marketing people are mostly idiots and the planet would be better off without them. Just amazing! The even more amazing thing is that you can buy the test footage. It an extra on the Beany & Cecil SE DVD I just bought it so I'll report back when I've seen it. |

it would have been really cool to see an animated version. due to the scope of many of the adventures, you couldn't do it live action back then (now it will be all cg cartoon creatures, zzzzzzzzzzz....). Ray Harryhausen had also proposed doing it, but still would have had to change some things to make it a smaller more personal story.

I'm really interested in seeing this test footage as it is a product relatively close to the time of the original stories creation. "Pulp cartoon" for pulp adventure fantasy books.
As for the Rodriguez movie. I guess we'll see when it comes out. I'm burned out on the nu Star Wars type overblown CGI fests. It's like poi ice cream, fattening without anything tasty to it.
I used to draw sketches of what I thought Sinbad on Mars would look like. To me back then that was two of my favorite things (ERBs Barsoom and Harryhausen) coming together at once.

CGI overkill like poi ice cream...! (Strange analogy, but it sounds accurate.)
Never knew the stuff existed...never really liked poi in the first place...never could figure it out...I like taro chips, though. Those are tasty.

That's what I thought!
(Thread immediately turns into discussion about odd ice cream flavors.)
I did have this weird flavor a while ago that I thought was just great, though. It was gingerbread ice cream with a sour blueberry syrup swirled into it. Sounds strange but it was quite yummy.

yeah, poi ice cream sounds awful. i tried poi when i was in Hawai'i and don't ever need to eat it again.

Exactly my point, it's ice cream so it should be good. But it turns out to be poi ice cream which is going to either be bland or just yucky. New CGI slathered Star Wars = Poi ice cream most CGI-based adventure scifi crapfests = Poi ice cream Maybe Rodriguez will turn out a good film, who knows. I just get the feeling it will be a Trendmasters version. BTW, at ERBZine.com they are serializing an old UK newspaper strip of A Princess of Mars. It's a very loose translation thought... with two-armed Tharks.  |

Strike Rodriguez, it's Kerry Conran (Sky Captain) that is directing. I'm not sure if that's good or bad. Sky Captain looked good but wasn't very entertaining.
