My kids were watching the Leo DVD you sent them Dave. It was scary how much Leo and Kimba looked alike. It wasn't until I got on and researched that I learned they were the same lion. The kids really like both shows and it was cool to answer their questions. I will eventually get around to getting them the Jungle Emperor movie. I also had no idea just how much Disney ripped off Kimba/Leo for the Lion King. I went to a site that had side by side picture analysis and whoa, I can't believe Disney got away with the out and out plagiarism. Heck, in early production stills Simba was even white. Matthew Broderick had even said in an interview he was hired to do a remake of Kimba. There are all kinds of theories, but I do know by looking at those pics, that it is blatant. Heck, Disney sued to try and keep the 97 Leo movie from getting released, what a crock. The Lion King movies are good and the kids like them, I am more irritated at Disney for doing this. www.kimbawlion.com/ |

that's a great site, one i've visited before. i am going to have to get that Ultra-Edition, it sounds just great. i've always loved Kimba, i must have seen more of those episodes than any other of the Japanese shows growing up.
aside from Marine Boy, i think.

Way back when, Kimba and Speed Racer were both shows I saw a LOT of. I would like to get those Kimba DVD sets at one point but that might be too much Kimba to have!

Several years before Disney moved into pre-production on the LYIN' KING, Tezuka Productions approached Disney to propose a big-budget co-production based on the "Jungle Emperor" manga, which would re-introduce the characters to a world-wide audience. After talks petered out, someone at Disney revived the idea and decided that Tezuka Productions wouldn't give them any trouble if they cut them out of the deal. They were right and pulled off one of the greatest rip-offs in cinema history.
But, the media saw through THE LYIN' KING before it was released, and outed Disney before the public world-wide, and Tezuka Productions' official comments were very careful and leaned towards saying the the similarities were purely coincidental. Right... Disney eventually paid off Tezuka Productions an undisclosed amount of money to keep them quiet.
Disney tried again with ATLANTIS, which was a rip off of Gainax's NADIA: SECRET OF THE BLUE WATER. Fortunately, ATLANTIS sank at the box office, and is now largely as forgotten as the lost continent itself.

i'm glad they had to pay Tezuka something- i've never heard that before. it so galled me to see all that merchandise and know it wasn't close to being original.

The sad thing is the Lion King movies are well done. I do find it funny that the break out stars of those movies are a warthog and a mere cat. While I still think what Disney did was crappy, the first Lion King movie did have some stunning animation.
Man, now I think about it most of Disney's biggest hits aren't their creations. Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, Snow White, Robin Hood, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, The Lion King, and Winnie the Pooh. Damn, kind of sad now that I think about it.

i'm watching some of this Ultra Kimba edition, and man i love this show. it's a little preachy and sometimes corny, but overall it's very well written and acted. the musical score is quite good as well.
