This is my all time favorite anime series, and one of the main reasons I got into the genre back in the mid 80s. Of course this was used as the first section of ROBOTECH, but i was already familiar with the series and a fan because a local hobby shop carried a slew of kits from the show which i had been getting since around 1984. ROBOTECH changed alot of things about the plot but kept quite a bit of the storyline intact. Uncut with the original music score by Kentaro Haneda the series is amazing. This is definitely one of the top 3 or 4 anime series ever, and was the first to combine the robots as military weapons idea of GUNDAM, the epic space opera and character development of YAMATO and added the human drama of the love triangle/romance and the idol singer/musical aspect of the series with Lynn Minmay. This series is also the first to feature complex transforming robots (the earlier super robos like Gaiking and Raideen had simple transformations and the Getters transformations were unrealistically contrived-later series explained the transformations as molecular displacement and assorted scientific mumbo-jumbo!). I have the HK subbed dvd set and it's not too bad. I just finished watching the entire 36 episode run. I have also seen the first disc of ADV's recent release and it is fabulous-I am hoping to be able to pick up all 7 volumes eventually. The new english dub is excellent and even features Mari Iijima reprising her role as Minmay( she speaks english really well). Minmay's songs are excellent J-Pop in their own right as well. Classic classic stuff here!
