They had a dollar DVD at Walmart that caught my eye. It is put out by Digiview. It is called Defenders of Space and the cover art was very reminiscent of Voltron which is what caught my eye. Anyway, there are three Mecha in it. Two that look very much alike named Super Zaisour and Super Scorpio. One uses an Ax and one uses a Mace. The other Robot is called Phoenix King. His head looks like a cross between GoLion/Voltron and Optimus Prime's. He is fully red with a black Phoenix on his chest. He transforms into a Fire Engine. The cartoon was okay, certainly not bad for a buck but I have not been able to find anything at all about this cartoon. The story goes like this. Emporer Nicholas and his Daughter Medusa invade Arora, a colony of Earth. Two teens, Henry and Mary escape to Earth and find the Phoenix King to liberate their home. The people of the Nicholas Empire were blue skinned. I don't know if this helps any at all, but just wondering if you guys knew. They also have some cartoons called Defenders Universe and Space Thunder Kids that feature Robos that look like Manzinger.(saw them featured on the preview part of this disc.)

Hmm. I've never seen anything like those where I get $1 DVDs, just Superman, Popeye, Betty Boop and other stuff like that.

I'm not sure of the exact origin of these movies yajuta, but I'm pretty sure they are cheaply(but in a cheesy fun way) made Taiwanese or Korean ripoffs of popular Japanese shows of the times(early 80s maybe?). I've watched most of all 3 movies and the blatant copyright infringement is jawdroppingly funny! One movie(I forget which one) alon has characters that wear near exact copies of the uniforms from YAMATO, use a space train just like the Galaxy Express, have a robot named Mazinger 7 that looks like Gundam with Mazinger's head and the villinas have a bad robot that looks like a red version of Raideen! Add the really bad voice acting to the mix and you get some movies that make BRAIN 17 look like CITIZEN CANE! But I mean that in a good way of course! ;D The discs each have the movie's trailer as well, which is a neat bonus, but the credits are useless as the names are all what must be phony American ones.

they are pretty astounding to watch. but in a weird way kind of fun. i don't think they are Japanese at all, except in "inspiration". but such a strange amalgam of trends to use!

does the name "Joseph Lai" mean anything? yep, he's the mastermind behind these. i think they actually might have been released in theaters in Asian countries (aside from Japan, natch). DEFENDERS OF SPACE rips Grendizer and Getta Robo along with Optimus Prime!
