Man, that really stinks. Alex Toth was truly a fantastic character designer and an unsung talent in the US superhero genre.

Well if he died at his drawing board I guess there are worse way to go. Since his work in the 50s and 60s he has been a true influence to generations to come and it is evident in so many contemporary cartoons of today. A lot of them are homages or even comical pastiche of his work, but it is all done lovingly in honor of his hard-boiled, pulpy and heroic style.
I don't know what my childhood would have been like without Jonny Quest around to bring such exotic adventures into my life and probably help mould a lot of my ongoing fasciation with adventure and horror stories. And I don't know what Jonny Quest would have been like without Alex's designs.

his astounding use of 'negative space' has always impressed and amazed me and inspired me to use it when i draw, tho not nearly as effectively.
i can't imagine life without all the HB contributions he made. how boring!

I agree. Jonny Quest and Space Ghost are the best US made adventure cartoons ever. They were well written to begin with and Alex Toth's superb gritty character designs really brought them to life, and like David said, his use of negative space is unparralleled. To me Space Ghost is as iconic and innovative a hero design as Superman, Batman and Spider-man, with his simple white body suit and dramatic black hood, white eyes and flowing bright yellow cape-fantastic stuff!

I know he designed the look of THE SUPERFRIENDS in the 70's.
