As the year is coming to an end the SS Poseidon is on her last voyage, she's to be scrapped. Just after midnight the Poseidon, travling top heavy with too little ballast, is hit by a massive tidle wave which flips it over. A handful of survivors work their way up to the bottom of the ship in the hope of escaping before the ship finally sinks.
Rev. Frank Scott (Gene Hackman) is a renegade who's church is sending him to some country in Africa just to get rid of him. His theology is horrible but he geniuanly cares about people and turns out to be a good leader during the disaster. He's only able to convince a handful of the survivors to follow him as he climbs up to the bottom of the ship.
Det. Lt. Mike Rogo (Ernest Borgnine) is loud mouthed police officer who butts heads with the preacher. The detective's wife Linda (Stella Stevens), an ex-prostitute suffers from sea sickness and is afraid she might run into an old costumer on the cruise.
James Martin (Red Buttons) is a health nut, he jogs around the deck and takes pills instead of eating the ship's food. Mrs. Rosen thinks he's lonely and needs a wife.
Nonnie Parry (Carol Lynley) is a singer whos band got free booking for performing, they were on their way to a jazz festival. She reluctantly leaves her dead brother. One guess who she pairs up with.
Roddy McDowall is a crewmember (waitor) who's leg is broken in the flip.
Shelley Winters gained 35 pounds for her role in this film as Belle Rosen, a married woman on the way to Israel with her husband Manny (Jack Albertson) to see the 2 year old grandson they've never met.
Susan Shelby (Pamela Sue Martin) and Robin Shelby (Eric Shea) are sister and brother traveling together to where there parents are waiting for them. Until the disaster brother and sister act as if they can't stand each other. Susan has a crush on the older Rev. Scott.
Captain Harrison (Leslie Nielsen) reluctantly follows the order of Mr. Linarcos (Fred Sadoff ) a representative of the ship's new owners (a heartless corporation) to run full speed ahead even though the Poseidon does not have enough ballast and is running top heavy. Fortunantly the corprate represenative is one of the first to died. Unfortunantly so is the captain.
An Irwin Allen film. One of the first disaster movies, and my favorite.
The DVD includes the theatrical trailer and a cast biographty/filmography for the leading cast members.
Been remade twice, once without "Adventure" in the title.
