Michael Caine - Lt. Col. J.O.E. Vandeleur
Sean Connery - Maj. Gen. Roy Urquhart
Edward Fox - Lt. Gen. Brian Horrocks
Elliott Gould - Col. Robert Stout
Gene Hackman - Maj. Gen. Stanislaw Sosabowski
Anthony Hopkins - Lt. Col. John Frost
Hardy Krüger - Maj. Gen. Ludwig
Ryan O'Neal - Brig. Gen. James Gavin
Laurence Olivier - Dr. Jan Spaander
Robert Redford - Maj. Julian Cook
Maximilian Schell - Lt. Gen. Wilhelm Bittrich
This is the story of Operation Market-Garden, the allies greatest failure of World War II. Field Marshal Montgomery thought the allies could easily capture and hold several bridges of stragetic importance. He was wrong.
The British were arrogant. They wouldn't listen to anybody else. The Polish Maj. Gen. Stanislaw Sosabowski told them it was a bad plan. They didn't listen to him. The Dutch underground sent them warning that a division of German tanks was right where it would do the most harm. The one British officer who believed the reports and tried to get his superiors to cancel the operation was declared untit due to fatigue. Another officer who thought the radio equipment would not work over the long distances was afraid to speak up because he knew his superiors did not want to hear about any probelems. Officers in the field found themselves unable to reach each other nevermind contacting England. With the radios not functioning the ground crews could not contact the airplanes which kept dropping their badly needly supplies on ground controled by the Germans.
Brig. General James Gavin: So that's it. We're pulling them out. It was Nijmegen.
Lt. Colonel J.O.E. Vandeleur: It was the single road getting to Nijmegen.
Lt. General Horrocks: No, it was after Nijmegen.
Lt. General Frederick "Boy" Browning: And the fog, in England.
Maj. General Stanislaw Sosabowski: Doesn't matter what it was. When one man says to another, "I know what let's do today, let's play the war game."... everybody dies.
