I watched the Something Weird dvd of this yesterday. It's a beautiful widescreen dubbed print and the movie just looks gorgeous! This is also one of my favorite Italian muscleman epics because it has monsters(rockmen, skullmasked alien priest, Gamera-tusked ape),not one but 3 babes, some great sets, that dramatic use of color lighting that the Italians do so well and Alan Steel's rather laid back and humorous take on Hercules. Not that I mean his acting is funny, he plays the character that way, purposely. Highly recomended. And of course, being a Something Weird disc, there's extras by the chariot-full! Another complete feature, the full screen version of THE WITCH'S CURSE which was pretty good and very, very bizaare. shortened versions of 2 or 3 other Italian peplums and a ton of trailers and poster/ad art! I know Retromedia also put a disc of this feature out, which i haven't seen. Something Weird used the original poster art for the cover, but Retromedia went one better and used some spectacular painted foreign poster art.

i agree, though i thought it was a widescreen WITCH'S CURSE they found as well. so glad to see this widescreen and uncut. Something Weird always gets the good presentations, that's for sure.

I have a dollar dvd of this from DIGIVIEW and it's missing the Tusked ape.Yet it gladly kept in all those boring scenes of people running around aimlessly in a duststorm for what seems ages!!!

That cut of the film that is missing the ape (who is onscreen all of about one minute) goes back to at least 1985 when Goodtimes released it on video. I don't think they cut the monkey out though, as they always had the best public domain prints of any PD vhs companies. It probably came from a UHF station or something. Has anyone seen the retromedia version? I'm curious what print Fred Olen Ray used for his disc.

i had the RetroMedia disc, and it lacked the ape as well. the only place that used to have that version was the stupid vacuum cleaner show, which i thought meant i would never get to see it.
yay for Something Weird!

I knew that the idiots on MST3K had the only uncut version for along time. I'm so glad Something Weird found such a great uncut widescreen print! MST3K was never funny, they always missed the point that alot of people actually wanted to watch the movies! And once they got on the Sci-Fi channel and started making fun of classic Universal films from the 50s, forget it, they lost the tiny amount of credibility they had in my eyes. The material they came up with was never very funny either. If you want proof check out the recent dvd of colorized Stooges shorts from 20th century Fox. the shorts are the 4 PD ones, but they look great and you can watch them both colorized and black and white, and honestly both versions look good. But they ruin it by having filler material with Mike Nelson and two other jackasses that were writers on MST3K as hosts for each short and the "funny" material they come up with is absolutely awful! Luckily you can skip these idiots and just watch the Stooges!

I felt that after Joel left MST3K it was less about fun, heartfelt ribbing of films we all loved to just plain vicious mean spirited attacks ranging from personal comments to often times borderline racist comments.

You know, I'd have to agree with you Raul. When i first saw MST3K, I thought it was pretty good -it was early episodes with Joel. When i saw it again regularly it was with Mike Nelson and i hated it, for exactly the reasons you mentioned. Anyways, I'm planning to run the companion disc to Herc vs the Moonmen tonight- GOLIATH AND THE DRAGON! This one I haven't watched either film on, but I know the second film is full screen. I have so many dvds and tapes that I have never had a chance to sit down and watch it's ridiculous! I could honestly get rid of cable and not go wiothout anything repeated to watch for months!

I heard that Goodtimes had finally gone out of business or gotten bought out by some faceless corporate type. Either way it's too bad as they were always my favorite PD video company. They always had better source prints than the other budget video labels that were around in the 80s and they managed to rise above the "bargain basement" level for awhile through deals with Columbia and Universal to release certain movies from their studio libraries. The very first pre recorded VHS I ever bought was from Goodtimes in fact-DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS way back in 1985! Back then even the $10 PD budget label tapes were recorded in SP.

i think the first one i got from them was GODZILLA VS MEGALON- it was amazing to be owning an actual complete (or so we thought) Godzilla movie after only owning the 8mm comps for so long.

Something Weird's print of this is astounding. it looks great. i'm amazed at the movies that keep showing up like this, letterboxed and good looking.

I have the PD version but haven't had a chance to sit down and watch it yet. It's been a crazy couple of years. But I'll have to put this back on my radar!
