This a change in pace from all the horror movies I've been watching.
I don't know what impulse led me to buy this DVD. I don't actually like the story of Lancelot and Guinevere, the story of a disloyal friend and a faithless wife. I did like the movie until the affair, then I depised Lancelot and hated Guinevere. Though I did think sentencing her to being burnt at the stake was cruel. A quick sword thrust to the heart would have sufficed. Don't worry Lancelot saves her.
In addition to playing the lead role Cornel Wilde also produced and directed this film. Jean Wallace was Mrs. Wilde.
King Arthur sends a message to King Leodogran asking for the hand of his daughter Guinevere in marriage. Leodogran sends the young knight Sir Tors with a response. Leodogran challenges Arthur's claim to the thrown of Briton, but instead of waging war over it he suggests trial by combat. Each man will chose a champion who will fight to the death. If Arthur's champion wins Leodogran will acknlowdge Arthur's claim to be king and will give him his daughter in marriage. If not, he wont. Althoug its a close battle Arthurs champion Sir Lancelot kills Leodogran's champion Sir Dorjak and Sir Lancelot escorts Princess Guinevere to Camelot. Sir Lancelot becomes torn between his duty to his king and feelings he develops for Guinevere.
As Sir Lancelot and Queen Guinevere betray King Arthur, the King's son, Sir Mordred, born to a woman not Arthur's wife, plots a different kind of betrayl. He wants the crown for himself.
Cornel Wilde's Lancelot speak with an accent, since Lancelot is supposed to be French. Merlin introduced Lancelot to a new discovey, soap. Lancelot in turn introduces it to Guinevere. Merlin is just an old man who is the King's councilor. Since this film is about Lancelot not Arthur its Lancelot who fights the final battle against Mordred.
I had little sympathy for Guinevere. Lancelot at least felt guilty for betraying his friend and king. Guinevere thinks only of herself and her lust for Lancelot. In the end of course she finally feels guilty and becomes a nun. We're supposed to think this is a selfless and noble act but I don't.
All in all I prefer "Ecalibur" in which Merlin has some great lines.
According to IMdb Cornel Wilde put a lot of his own money into this film, and lost it when it didn't do well.
