On distant planet enough to Earth, the Dark Crystal was broken. Just a small piece was removed but that was enough the shatter the world. What was once fertle green land becomes baren rock. Two new species apear, the evil Skeksis and the peaceful Mystics. A native species, the Gelfling predicted that one day the the Dark Crystal would be made hole, by the hand of a Gelfling. To keep this from happening, because they believed it would bring the destruction the Skeksis set out to destroy the Gelflings. One thousand years later, the Skeksis and the Mystics are dying out. There only ten of each and their leaders are both dying. Before he dies the wisest of the Mystics sends Jen, thought to be the last of the Gelfling, on a quest to fullfill the prophecy, heal the Dark Stone and save his world. Jen soon learns that he is not alone after all, there is another Gelfling, Kira, a female.
The Dark Crystal is unusual in that there are no human characters (or aliens who look human) in it.
Its an interesting story if you like fantasies or films featuring puppets.
Unfortunantly there is a sequel, The Power of the Dark Crystal, in the works. I say unfortunantly because A) Jim Henson is dead and I wouldn't trust someone else messing with his vision, B) according to the IMdb Frank Oz won't be directing it and C) to have a sequel means contradicting the ending of the original and D) we now live in a CGI obsessed world.
