Kerwin Mathews ... Jack Judi Meredith ... Princess Elaine Torin Thatcher ... Pendragon Walter Burke ... Garna Don Beddoe ... Diablotin the Imp Barry Kelley ... Sigurd Dayton Lummis ... King Mark Anna Lee ... Lady Constance Roger Mobley ... Peter Robert Gist ... McFadden the Scottish Captain Tudor Owen ... Chancellor Ken Mayer ... Boatswain
the evil Prince of Witches, Pendragon wants to not only rule Cornwall, but all of England. to do this, he will marry the Princess Elaine whether she wants to or not. too bad for him, the gallant Jack is there to stop him in his first attempt.
Pendragon later kidnaps Elaine and casts a spell on her, making her evil. Jack rescues her, breaks the spell and then has to battle Pendragon to make their escape!
this is a fun movie, made to capture the same audience as THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD, especially by using two of the same principal actors.
Jim Danforth did the primary effects, and while the monsters are not as well sculpted as Harryhausen's, they sure are weird looking, making this one of the most unusual of all family fantasy features. i love the tentacled sea monster the most!

This was probably the first major stopmo related fantasy film I saw on the big screen. It was a creature feature matinee type thing in the mid 70s. Probably the same theatre I saw Super Argo and Captain Sinbad, etc at.
I was blown away by the vibrant colorful pallette of the cinematography and creatures. The action to a 10 year old was pretty amazing to behold. I mean (blacked out because it's a spoiler)hanging a giant with a wind-mill, who'd come up with such a crazy idea?
Sadly the latest DVD release was bare bones, even though the packaging looked pretty darn good for a photoshop job.
Wah Chang's creature designs definately have their own style and most people probably either totally love em or hate em. I'm sort of in the middle. I understand where he's coming from on a juvenile fantasy level of art direction, but sometimes feel it gets a little too on the silly side. He also did the dino sculpts for LAND OF THE LOST and the dragon in Dr LAO. Also he designed the phaser and tricorder type devices in STAR TREK.

i don't remember if i saw this or GOLDEN VOYAGE first, but this one has made a greater impression on me.
story wise i think it's a bit superior to the Sinbad movies, but it's sad Small had to be SO bound up in copying 7th VOYAGE so much, as they could have done with some different actions of the creatures.
but i so love the tentacled beastie! he's green, so he's obviously Irish!

I watched this movie for the first time years and years ago on PBS and loved. I agree, the stop motion is a bit amateurish, but the designs are awesome. I love the sea serpent and the galligantua. Excellent monsters.

I was not able to see this for a long time, and when I did see it, I was really pleasantly surprised. It's a fun picture. This might make a nice double-bill with The Magic Sword!

those two movies would make a perfect double bill- two of the strangest kiddie movies of all time. i don't even think that Bert I Gordon (BIG) and Ed Small knew they were doing it.
"brought to you by BIG and Small!" what a tagline!

If you look on Amazon at the Jack DVD, you get this Buy this DVD with The Magic Sword DVD ~ Basil Rathbone today!
I guess they really do seem to go together. I have a pd disc of THE MAGIC SWORD and the print absolutely stinks. It sounds like MGM did a good job on the current presentation.

I have to admit, that as a child, watching those scenes when the princess is kidnapped from the ship, I was frightened! Even today, watching it as an adult, it just seems weird! It jumps from being a fantasy to being something more macabre. But I love it!
Yes, the stop-motion isn't as good as Harryhausen's, but I'd take this over many headache inducing CGI films any time.
