been reading the book "Hardcore Zen: punkrock, monster movies, and the truth about reality" by Brad Warner. i picked it up because i knew who Warner is---he played in the early 80's hardcore punk band ZERO DEFEX and later had the the band Dementia 13. turns out that he moved to japan---and got himself a job at Tsubaraya working on Ultraman. also turns out that he wrote a fantastic book about Buddahist zen which also double as his life story. it's published bt WisdomPublications. do yourself a favor and check it out. or check out the hardcorezen.com website

Buddhism is NOT a religion.i won't espouse what it is---but Xeno is a great example of a type of zen.

aside from being in the wrong section (BOOKS, Mark, silly) i see nothing political or religious about this- it sounds to me like a bio that talks about his beliefs- Mark wasn't telling anyone TO believe in Buddhism. that's my take, anyway. you could recommend someone reading a bio of THomas Jefforson in the same manner, if it's a good book. did i make myself understandable enough? i can try again if i didn't do a good enough job.

thanks David---you are correct in saying that i wasn't pushing anything on anyone. and as for the post not being in the LIT section---i figured with the Ultraman connection it would sit better in this one. especially since i know that the lit section is one of the least read.

Buddhism is most certainly a religion and by suggesting people should read a book on it you are promoting religion.
A bio on Thomas Jefferson wouldn't be promoting a religion.

well, perhaps, but i think you could suggest any number of fine books about CS Lewis ("Images of Salvation" is one i have, i think that's the name) and his bio would include his beliefs. i wouldn't mind that either, or Tolkein, or whoever. i do think a bio of Jefferson would include his beliefs- it would almost have to. that's the way i was looking at it. the book "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" doesn't really go too indepth about Zen in that. anyway, i love biographies, so recommend any! in the book part, OK?

Literature is NOT FOR READING my good man.It is to hide the entrance to Adam West's cave with nuclear reactor.

Perhaps we should move this topic as well? I think I shall try.
I don't see the problem in Mark's recommendation of the book, in that I think he was simply talking about a book rather than Buddhism. What we are trying to avoid is discussion of the merits of different faiths.
EDIT : I see no way to move threads. Poo.

I'd rather recommend books by C.S. Lewis, than about C.S. Lewis. There's one I re-read just about every year.

He translated for our Japanese guests at Godzillafest. Hopefully we'll be seeing him again for our next show. I'd been thinking about getting Hardcore Zen. What do you think of it overall so far?

I found it and made use of it, mostly because you accidentally moved the thread to the cartoon board.

Shonokin: i've met Brad also---but it was about 20 years ago when my band played a gig with Zero Defex. haven't seen him since. as for the book-------no it's NOT a bio per se, although he does go into certain biographical details through-out it---it IS a book about zazen- (even mentions the zen of REPO MAN! wheeee!)--and totally worth reading no matter what stance you take on life and such. even my own mother loved it---go figure!

Sounds cool and think I could relate seeing as how I grew up on a mix of Kaiju and Punk rock. I had a band in the mid-80s and played in others until the early 90s and got deeply into Japanese culture around that time.
