I've been so interested in watching the new movie and watching the old movie again that I found the book online and read it. I had tried to read several times as a youngster but couldn't get past the first several chapters. Now, it was a lot easier to read. Interestingly enough, I was able to read The Time Machine and The Invisible Man when I was still in the 5th grade.
The book was cool. The idea of the invisible heat beam that was fired on the people, after whom would "spontaneously combust" was quite cool. Also the idea of the tripods chasing down individual people and banging them against trees with metal tentacles was pretty eerie.

You know, although the story is rather simpler, there's something quite magnetic about The Time Machine. I love both the book and the 1960 movie. It's not filled with explosions and death rays and stuff like that (the novel was only about 70 pages or so) and yet it draws you in quite well.
How was the remake? Anyone?

I reread the WAR OF THE WORLDS novel this fall for the first time in many years myself and really enjoyed it. It was quite frighteneing and Wells was amazingly acurate in predicting many weapons and concepts that are either fact or very theoretically possible today that in his day were wild fantasy! As for the TIME MACHINE remake, i enjoyed it, but I may be biased as it was filmed partially in my hometown of Saratoga NY and I almost got to be an extra. WAR OF THE WORLDS was partially filmed around here to. Hmmm, upstate NY must be the place to film HG Wells movies these days!

"if this, then that" is always a good way to start science fiction, i think.
