well, i was going to wait until tomorrow to start the new one, but what the heck. it's 15 chapters, so that could take me all year to get through!
here are the episode titles:
# The Electrical Brain # The Bat's Cave # The Mark of the Zombies # Slaves of the Rising Sun # The Living Corpse # Poison Peril # The Phony Doctor # Lured By Radium # The Sign of the Sphinx # Flying Spies # A Nipponese Trap # Embers of Evil # Eight Steps Down # The Executioner Strikes # The Doom of the Rising Sun
i think Batman may be trying to help our WWII wartime efforts in this one! i've never seen this serial, so it should be very interesting.

right away, we are introduced to the Batcave and Batman, the nation's number one crime fighter! the narrator tells us that Batman and Robin stand ready to fight Nazi spys to the death.
THE Batman calls Captain Arnold and tells him he has a nice package for him. one spy tells Batman Dr. Daka will not be happy, and Robin wants to wait around to see Arnold's face, but THE Batman reminds him that he has a date.
Bruce and Dick pick up Linda. Dick tells Bruce he's taking the masquerade too far. but he says no, also because the gov't has a secret assignment for THE Batman.
Linda's uncle Martin Warren is picked from his prison release up by his old cellmate- tricked by these hoodlums. Bruce has Alfred give chase! the villains' car changes colors so Bruce and co. lose them.
"since a wise government rounded up the shifty eyed Japs" wow, that is just weird to hear, even from a serial set in war time. a good way to teach people about history
Marty is taken to Little Tokyo to meet Dr. Daka and the League of the New Order- dishonored specialists. i reckon by the end of the series Marty will be exonerated. they need him because he is an industrialist. Marty tells him no way! Daka shows him what will happen if he refuses- zombification!how can they keep using these guys if they keep doing this? these zombies are precursors to the ones in SUPERARGO VS THE FACELESS GIANTS- same headgear!
Daka uses some truth serum on Marty. he wants some radium for an atom smashing ray gun. man, that gun works! he will use it to open the safe at the Gotham City Foundation.
Later, at Dr. GORDON's office, Linda berates Bruce for being late as Uncle Martin is still missing. Daka's men go after the truck- Bruce, Dick and Alfred see them, and decide THE Batman and Robin need to go into action!
Dr. Gordon interupts the villains, but is taken out by Marty while the radium is collected. THE Batman crashes through a window and gives chase to the villains, narrowly missing being blasted to atoms! the fight is on! Linda comes to and calls the police. the sack of radium is rescued by Daka's man and he leaves.
Batman is thrown over the edge of the roof!

I saw an ebay auction for this. The description claimed that it was this serial that introduced the Bat Cave which was then added to the comics.
I just got Superman, Atom Man vs Superman and Captain America serials. I also have Captain Marvel (one of my favorites), The Shadow and Zorro's Fighting Legions.

Wan't the "shifty eyed japs" remark deleted or dubbed over for the video release?

as far as i know, all the "offensive" remarks were removed, but i've not seen that version. it's just stupid to do that. from what i've watched, the main thing this serial suffers from is relative cheapness- the costumes, the non-Batmobile, and some mundane direction- Batman breaking through the glass should have been VERY dramatic, and it's just so-so. more soon!

Batman lands on some scaffolding and Robin stops one villain and they retrieve the gun while taking a gangster the Bat's Cave. the narrator calls him PRINCE Daka at the beginning They immediately scare him into talking, good thing criminals are a cowardly superstitious lot. then they just LEAVE him in the cave!
Alfred reads a comic book when Bruce and Dick return through the clock. they scare him by using the gun to destroy a lamp. nice comedy bit they drop the gun and gunsel off at the police station.
Daka is upset at the loss of the radium gun due to THE Batman's interference. he plans on using Linda to do it! the fiend! he has a gunsel call her and pretend to be her uncle, to meet her at the Blue Parrot at nine.
Bruce and Dick also go, as Bruce smells something fishy. she gets gassed in the phone booth. Bruce and Dick go undercover, Dick is a paperboy and Bruce is a bum of some kind. as far as i can tell- he's a good enough actor to pull these roles off, as is the guy playing Robin. i like them.
"Scar" comes into the flophouse and heads to the third floor. Bruce spies him and goes to change into Batman! not THE Batman this time, and no batarangs yet either. wonder when those were introduced to the series? they climb up to rescue Linda, and the fight is on. it's kind of odd to see fights like this without word balloons! some cannisters are smashed and the duo has to take Linda outside through the window. "Scar" send a current after Batman and they fall off the wire!
next- "The Mark of the Zombies"

Robin makes sure Batman has a line and they race off with Linda. Daka is very annoyed that THE Batman "a rank amateur" keeps interfering. he then zombifies another man. Daka also plans on blowing up a supply train as well.
THE Batman plants a story in the paper about the gun, and Daka suspects a trap. well, duh, who wouldn't? THE Batman has Alfred as the bait, and he also suspects Daka may be early. Good thinking, THE Batman...
Alfred makes sure all the "boys" get into the office, but one is aware of THE Batman, fortunately Robin helps foil that plan! THE Batman breaks in through another window and the fight is on! Alfred gets clocked, asks for Scotland Yard and begins to fire wildly! that scares the crooks away.
THE Batman finds a map that shows the plan of bombing the train. they leave by way of the roof- apparently Alfred does as well! Robin gets to drive! the villains are cutting it close as the train is early (yeah right). THE Batman shows up and another battle is on, right on the tracks! an errant wrench knocks THE Batman out, right as the train shows rolls over him!
next: Slaves of the Rising Sun

There was a release by GoodTimes that had the offensive remarks either redubbed or deleted. This was around the time of the 1989 BATMAN film.

i wish this DVD had chapters...
Robin rolls THE Batman off the tracks into the water. the villains of course think the Dynamic Duo is done for, and they don't check. THE Batman has a real problem with his cape. the train is a miniature! Daka has crocs as pets- CRIKEY!
Daka plans on celebrating with his croneys. he's not pleased with Foster's failure. Foster tells Daka off! he sees the writing on the wall as to who will win the war, and it's not the Axis powers. just not a good idea with no backup, really. guess who is croc food?
Bruce and Dick are experimenting with the gun, and Linda gets another message about her uncle. man, this Bruce is a FOP! guess who is going to go help her out, again? Bruce impersonates "Swami Dah", who Linda went to see. he tells her she's in grave danger, but does she believe? nope!
the villains knock Linda out and steal the radium orders- Batman and Robin take off after the crooks. they really could have used a batmobile here, one big missed opportunity.
THE Batman plans on blasting his way into the armored car with the radium gun. another front seat tussle in the car! and over the cliff it goes!
next: The Living Corpse

THE Batman jumps off before the car plunges over the edge. Daka is annoyed again at "worthless" henchmen. he gets a message from a submarine with a large valuable package.
Alred brings in the mail, and there's a coded message in it (addressed to Bruce). it's his first special assignment from Washington!
Daka's men do something right and retrieve the package (in a coffin). it has a Japanese soldier in suspended animation, who will tell Daka his message- then die! and he does. he also gives Daka some micro film with a map.
Daka has some engineers kidnapped so they can fly the plane from the plan. Bruce and Dick are at the airport "working". their "pocket" radios are huge! the mindwiped pilots take over the plane, with Bruce inside, changing to Batman. Dick tells him about the pilots. Dick tells the army about it as well. then the fight is on between Batman and the ringers, while anti-aircraft is used against the plane! it's hit and crashes!
next: Poison Peril

I find it fascinating that Batman would be treated as a special agent of washington nowadays he's treated as someone who is on the fringe of the system. Then you have Superman who is for the most part pro establishment[would make more sense to have had supes as a government agent] and then you have green arrow who is so antiestablishment I doubt even the far lefters would like him.Batman has always walked that thin line.Though not neccesarily enamored with the establishment he would most likely defend it when attacked so to speak by evildoers. But to work for them directly he would certainly never do.

i think by this time in the comics Batman had mellowed and was considered a true good guy, like Superman.
Batman escapes unharmed. Daka is annoyed that he is still at large. they plan on securing the blueprint of the motor instead of waiting for the Yankees to build it. then the Japanese sub is wiped out!
Alfred stalls Linda about the whereabouts of Bruce and Dick.
now Daka wants Batman destroyed. they now plan on using Linda Page to get to Batman and find out who he really is! Daka is sure that the simpering foo Bruce Wayne couldn't be Batman though! he has his man plant a dictaphone in Linda's appt.
her uncle's pal Kent Coltan has a new mine, but before Daka can find out where it is, Dick pulls the plug on the bug. i think there will be a fight soon.
there is!
they fight off the goons and then help Coltan. Coltan gets a call from "Martin" but Bruce heads him off and then Alfred becomes "Coltan". this Batman sure is smart, though! they spoil Daka's plan again, but the vat of chemicals springs a leak- and the place goes up! and they goons knocked Batman and Robin out!
next episode- "The Phony Doctor"

the falling beams formed an arch that protected the Batman from the explosion. Bruce warns Coltan about the plot. he tells him not to admit anyone.
and yet he lets Dr. Henry Franklin enter. ya think he's the phoney doc from the episode title? naturally Coltan gets kidnapped.
Bruce and Dick look for clues. they find a "Japanese laundry mark" in a piece of linen.
Coltan gets a demonstration from Daka. he causes some problems, but doesn't have any kind of escape plan and gets caught easily.
The Batman and Robin go to the roof of the laundremat and begin to battle some of Daka's henchmen. Robin gets knocked out and The Batman gets pushed down an elevator shaft, with the car descending upon him!
Lured By Radium

Post by Xenorama ™ on Jun 4, 2005 18:04:16 GMT -8
Robin wakes up in time to stop the elevator from killing The Batman. they skedaddle out of there.
Linda is sure her uncle's disappearance has something to do with the radium. she plans on going out to the mine and wants Bruce to go with her. he agrees after some pouting on her part.
Daka and Coltan exchange words and Daka puts the zombifier on him. it works, he tells Daka where the mine is. six of Daka's men take Coltan up to his mine. upstate Gotham looks a lot like CA...
Coltan takes the men on a tour of the mine and makes a break for it.
Bruce gets some information from an Indian on the way to Coltan's cabin. Bruce and Dick go look at Coltan's cave, leaving Alfred with Linda. Coltan comes up from a secret passage. he plans on blowing up the mine along with the polecats and tells Linda to warn Dick and Bruce.
Alfred gets caught by the villains. Batman and Robin run smack into the other four henchmen and a battle takes place. Linda escapes into the secret passage to get away from the two men, but they just follow her right down into the battle where a villain falls onto the plunger and the dynamite goes off!
#9 The Sign of the Sphinx
sorry about the blue... let's see...

they sure recap a lot of the previous episode in the beginning here...
several crooks are on the other side of the explosion, two are on the other side. Batman and Linda are saved by falling timbers, but only one crook survives. Bruce puts him in a trailer for the ride home.
Linda believes Coltan is dead. Batman takes the crook into the Bat's Cave to let his vampire friends "interogate" him. they don't tie him very tightly- it's a trick for information. he finds the convenient PHONE in the cave. Batman finds out where the call went.
man, phones worked funny in those days!
Bruce surprises Alfred in his disguise as Chuck White. they let Linda in to see if his boxer's guise works. it does!
he goes to the Sphinx club to infiltrate the gang. they intend to search him, but Robin interupts them with a Bat Signal! naturally they set off to get The Batman (shooting at Robin the whole time) and Batman makes a pretty decent appearance.
the battle is on again! Batman gets knocked into a net and they drop the gangplank on him!
next- Flying Spies
|
|
|
Post by Xenorama ™ on Jun 14, 2005 12:35:14 GMT -8
Batman rolls out of the way just as the gangplank falls, pulls Robin from the drink and returns to stately Wayne Manor. they release Marshall as well.
Daka is upset at his men, and wonders if there is more than one Batman. he gets a call saying his agents have radium now.
Bruce gets a coded message from Washington. Linda shows up and is mad at Bruce for missing their date. she doesn't like Chuck White at all!
Daka gets word that the feds are searching everyone on planes, so he should use "Plan 18". he wants to see the new members of the gang as well.
Chuck goes back to the Sphinx club to meet with Fletcher. he takes the odd job and has Alfred play cabbie who takes them to the secret gang place where Daka checks him out. Daka tells his man to take Chuck out on tonight's assignment.
they get to the field where the radium is to be dropped. Chuck belts a couple guys and signals Dick. aboard the plane the guy breaks the bathroom window and drops the radium. bathroom window? in a plane? they are flying low enough to see a flare?
Batman and Robin start battling the gang, and they grab a car to get to the radium- the gang shoots out the tires and the car plummets off a cliff!
#11 A Nipponese Trap

Post by Xenorama ™ on Jun 18, 2005 16:31:25 GMT -8
i reckon this is one of the censored titles.
Batman jumps out of the car at the last minute. not a long recap this time. the villains pick up the radium. Robin and Alfred pick up Batman.
Daka is happy they succeeded. Bruce plans on having Chuck White interogate Marshall. Daka plans on constructing his weapon. Chuck gets put in jail next to Marshall and finds out where to give his "Batman info".
Dick and Alfred have "Chuck" bailed out, as does Daka, who executes "Plan 5". "Chuck's" car is rammed by a big truck. Bruce is barely scratched!
the villains are sure "Chuck" is dead, but Batman and Robin are on the way! after a brief fight, Robin covers the henchmen with a gun, but Batman gets clobbered. they take his mask off and think it's Chuck White. Robin calls the police, but gets KOed as well.
Batman comes to just as the dynamite is lit! kaboome!
next episode: Embers of Evil

Post by Xenorama ™ on Jun 21, 2005 21:56:59 GMT -8
Batman and Robin drop down through a secret door and escape the explosion.
Daka thinks Chuck White is dead- then his stooges tell him Marshall is alive and in jail. Daka sends Marshall some special cigarettes- Medusa Brand. Captain Arnold sends for Bruce and Dick to identify Marshall, but he's dead.
Bruce analyzes the cigarette and tells Arnold what happened.
Daka still thinks there may be more than one Batman, so he goes after Linda. he will use the zombified Uncle Martin to get Linda to his old Ajax factory.
naturally, Batman and Robin head down there. the battle begins in the basement, and the factory catches on fire (due to a dropped smoke, eh). Robin goes off to look for Linda and the Batman is trapped in the blaze!
next- #13 Eight Steps Down

|
|
Post by Xenorama ™ on Jun 22, 2005 23:16:43 GMT -8
Batman squeaks out before the building collapses. he does know Linda is still in trouble. Batman phones Arnold and chews him out for not arresting the guy.
he then goes to the Sphinx Club to investigate. he beats up a thug and takes him to the Bat Cave for info.
Daka's men tell him (again) they've killed the Batman. Daka meets with Linda and tells her he wants to meet Bruce Wayne to talk about "bats". meanwhile, Batman and Robin search some of the old hideouts.
Daka plans on zombiefying Linda since she won't cooperate with him. Batman inadvertantly lets Daka know he is near, and Daka springs his deadly spike trap on him, and starts the zombification process on Linda!
penultimate chapter- The Executioner Strikes
