This TV movie (from HBO) is based on the novel by Louis L'Amour. I love his books.
"In 1876 Wyoming, the guns is the only law. And for Duncan and Susan McKasel (Tom Conti and Kate Capshaw), newly arrived settlers beset by outlaws, rugged frontiersman Con Vallian (Sam Elliott) is the only hope." -- from the DVD case
Duncan McKaskel takes his wife Susanna and Tom west intending to become a cattle rancher. When a group of bandits decide to steal there horses, mules and Mrs. McKaskel, frontiersman Con Vallian comes to the family's aid (because he wants revenge against an Ute who joined the gang and because he's taken with Susanna).
Has some simularities to "Shane" but actually a very different story.
DVD includes audio commentary by directory Robert Day, TV Promo, filmography
There are 1963 and 1995 movies with the same title. I know nothing about the first. The last is a western but a completely different story, having nothing in common with this film.
Con Vallian: "Shoot to kill. Wounds don't impress them. They've all been shot before."
