an evil man, Cap. Smith is raiding coaches and wagons in Pecos. they also capture Col. Jeffries who is supposed to collect taxes in Texas. after they kill him, they plan on taking over Texas! he takes Jeffries place and starts his collection business.
a band of Texas Rangers shows up but Smith has them ambushed. all of them are slaughtered, but one. Tonto shows up and helps him recover.
meanwhile, Smith's men are arresting people for carrying guns in Texas! President Lincoln sends George Blanchard down to look into "Jeffries" activities. the Lone Ranger is saving people from Smith's men as well, and driving him crazy! he plans a trap to find out who the Ranger is, but the five men swear a vow for the honor of Texas.
right before they are executed, George Blanchard shows up. he's brought along his daughter, Joan. the Ranger rides out to protect the ranch door from being blown up but is too late and Smith's men ride in, right over him!next~ Thundering Earth it's nice to hear the 1812 Overture played. i laughed out loud when the thing about no guns was said. so far, great stunts already. this Tonto sounds almost exactly like the tv Tonto. the five men idea is a cool one. so this is how the Blanchards got to Texas! there's no explanation of how the Ranger got Silver, and no mention of the silver bullets, either.

Clayton was the first Ranger i ever saw, and of course, the Ranger most people know and love. this guy does a good job with the voice, but it's very much the serial style.
both are much better than that aborted WB Lone Ranger that was a nancy boy of the first degree.

the Ranger leaps in and puts the fire out, saving Tonto, but is then captured. Dark Cloud, the chief, questions him about the silver bullets, and realizes that the bullets did not come from the Ranger. Jeffries is more than a little annoyed about this development. he sends Kester after the rangers. he puts Joan on the wagon to stop the rangers. the Ranger goes in to help Joan while Tonto goes to stop the rangers from blowing up the new powder wagon.
the Ranger takes over the wagon, though he has to engage in a fistfight with the driver. he falls under the wagon, but does the old "hold onto the undercarriage" trick, all while the rangers are shooting at the powder kegs- then ka-blooey!

each Ranger is missing a spur! Kester gets them turned over to him. the rangers get away and the Lone Ranger heads out to save Joan from having to marry Jeffries. he arrives just in time and whips Jeffries and then gets away.
he and Tonto hide out the barn, and a gunfight ensues. a fire starts and our heroes are trapped!
this episode runs 12 minutes which is 4 minutes shorter than it's given running time. that would explain why i have no idea how the rangers escaped from Kester and the wedding plans. the sound in here is also weird, like it's been dubbed again. a very choppy episode.

Dick sacrifices himself to save the Blanchards and Sammy. the Ranger promises to avenge Dick. Jeffries rides out himself to deal with the Ranger. they head to the cave and trap our heroes. Bert and Allen head out to decoy the troopers. Silver chews his way loose and follows the two rangers.
the troopers follow Bert and Allan (and Silver) and we see one of the men get shot, and the other one jumps on Silver! the Ranger gets some men of his own, and they head to get the troopers and Jeffries.
a gun battle breaks out and Jeffries and Kester head out, with the Ranger and Tonto hot in pursuit. the Ranger knocks Kester out, and then fights with Jeffries until they both fall off the cliff.
Blanchard has a service for the four rangers, and then the Ranger shows up alive, and unmasks for his friends. he then heads out to battle injustice elsewhere in the West!
review- the mysterious Ranger idea (one of five rangers) is interesting, and works well in the serial, but it's not really the Lone Ranger if there are five working together. still, they did a good job keeping his ID a secret for 14 episodes. but finding out who the Ranger is... well, that's just wrong!
it's a good serial, and deserves a better edition. there are a few seconds missing from most of the episodes in this set, aside from one chapter that's missing 4 or more minutes. and the redubbed parts aren't even noted on the case.
