I know almost everyone will vote Tom Baker, but my favorite Doctor is John Pertwee, mainly because he is the Doctor that was on when I first seriously got into the program back in the summer of 1985. My second and third favorites would be Patrick Troughton and Peter Davison.

Like most 'Mericans, I first saw Tom Baker, but once getting to see the rest, Patrick Troughton has always been my favorite. Though some of the stories are repetitive, they tend to be really good stories and the Doctor had a great harried/horrified/comical way of dealing with things. I think he also had some of the best companions (outside of Sarah Jane who will always be my favorite) in Jamie and Zoe.

i'll go with Tom. he was the first one i saw. however, i quite like both John and Patrick a lot as well, in that order, and the rest are enjoyable (well, except for the new ones, since i haven't seen enough of them to make any kind of judgement). my first exposure to the Doctor was in Famous Monsters, so at least i knew what it was, though i was completely taken by surprise by the shot on video/film style they had when it debuted on PBS.

and now the new guy is done- if this will be the 11th regeneration of the Doctor, what will they do after #12?
and listen to the newbs whine about losing him! boy, can you imagine what it would have been like if the internets had been around earlier? and i'll admit to not wanting to like the Fifth Doctor, but he grew on me.

I liked Peter right from the start. A fresh new face after Tom, with a different flavor to the stories and some interesting twists. It was with Peter that I first saw a companion bite it, and good riddins Adric, nobody liked ya bud. On the commentrack for Earthshock Janet Fielding and Sarah Sutton talk about how they kept cracking up during the dramatic death of Adric. He must've felt swell about that.
After hearing Tennant speaking in his native Scots accent, I woulda liked him better if he'd used that rather than the BBC accent.

Since they destroyed Gallifrey (which makes no sense since without Gallifrey no TARDIS can function) there are no Time Lords to start the regeneration cycle over (as they did with the Master), unless he jumps to another alternate universe in which the Time Lords still exist.
What should happen between 12th and 13th Doctors is the appearance of the evil version of the Doctor introduced in Trial of a Time Lord.

After this latest season's tomfoolery with the bottled hand and the "two and a half doctors" during the finale, I don't think they are worried about the rules set for regenerations.
Hopefully Moffat will reign in some of the more ridiculous things RTD tended towards.

I haven't seen the latest season, have to wait for them to be released in US, so I can't comment.
