The Ghost Ship (1943)
Produced by Val Lewton Directed by Mark Robson
Richard Dix - Captain Will Stone Russell Wade - Tom Merriam, 3rd Officer Edith Barrett - Ellen Roberts Ben Bard - First Officer Bowns Edmund Glover - Jacob 'Sparks' Winslow, Radioman
Tom Merriamm, recent graduate from officers training school signs on his fist ship as third officer. He likes his captain until a sailor dies then he becomes convinced that his captain is a homicidal maniac but he can't convince the rest of the crew.
The problem with Val Lewton's films is that the endings are bad. I just don't know how this could have ended better.
Part of The Val Lewton Horror Collection, although its not really a horror movie. There are no ghosts, at least not in the sense of spirits of dead people. Just a man who has nothing but his authority as captain. Although he's loved by a woman he can't bring himself to make a life with her. He has no other interests but commanding his ship. He may as well be a ghost.
