yes, at last, one of my most favorite Godzilla movies of all time. it has many faults, but at least being dull isn't one of them. i saw this sometime in October of 1976, when it made it's way to Longmont CO. i had previously sat through two screenings of disney's re-release of BAMBI in order to see the trailer again (the infamous "Robotman" one).
then, instead of seeing THE BIG BUS (1976) i took my friend Scott to see this for his birthday. i think he liked faux disaster movies movies than i did, but i paid for it, so he went.
i loved the movie, even while wishing there was a bit more Godzilla in it. just goes to show you seeing a movie is all about timing.
i do recognize this movie has faults, including the dubbing of Roku-chan, and we can discuss the faults, even mentioning that stupid robot show.
i so wish this would get a decent DVD release from Sony. it was a big success in the US.

I’ve stated many times that this was my first Godzilla movie on I saw in the big screen which was also in 1976 (playing on a double-bill with the original “King Kong”). I remember that day quite clearly and sometimes it feels like it was only a few years back, rather than 32 years ago! (And of course, watching this a year or two later on NBC, becoming the only G-film to get a network broadcast – I think).
Because of that, this movie will always have a place in my heart. Now, watching it today, is it one of my favorites? No, not really. For me, this is not in the same league as DAM or “Monster Zero”.
But I also don’t think this is the worst Godzilla film ever – not by a long-shot. For one thing “Megalon” is straight forward, and not the narrative mess that I thought “Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah” was. And I also did not find it boring, unlike say “Godzilla 85” or “Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla”. (I'm not really a big fan of some of the fight scenes in Megalon, but at least we were not treated to an endless beam war!).
I think we will eventually get a proper DVD release of this film.

I'm surprised this hasn't gotten more replies! While, like David, I recognize this movie's many faults, I still love it dearly! This was the very first big-screen Godzilla I saw, at a drive-in on a double bill with GIANT SPIDER INVASION for my 5th birthday in May 1976, and is one of my most cherished childhood memories. This was also one of the movies shown yearly by ch9 WWOR from NYC the day after Thanksgiving back in the early 80s that I would watch my sorely missed uncle who loved kaiju movies and died unexpectedly in 1985. Aside from memories, I think Megalon is a great monster and I like this Godzilla suit quite a bit actually-alot more than the rather non descript 65-66 suit. I think it looked best here and in MG the following year. Jet Jaguar never realy did much for me, but I have always liked him. Now I realize he is actually derived as much from Go Nagai giant robo anime than Ultraman or any live action heroes of the era. Now if Jet had a rocket punch or Rust Hurrican, that would have been sweet!

i was very surprised to see the non-responses as well- remember the old board that had 12 pages or so? i wish we had saved it, or some of it, somewhere.

This is one of my favorite Godzilla films too. It was made in 1973 and then later released in the US in 1976, right? I didn't see it back then, but believe my first viewing was around '84 or '85. The cool thing is it was one of the first movies I let my first son stay up late to see (the other was EMPIRE STRIKES BACK). He especially loved it at 5 years old and I loved it too. In 1986, we got our first VCR and bought the film on VHS. Think it was Goodtimes and they paired it with THE SNOW CREATURE (1954) - coincidentally, that was a film my parents let me stay up late to see when I was very young. Well, we pretty much wore out that tape - still plays though . It's a great film/memory for my son (who's gonna be 28 soon) and me. I haven't seen it in quite a few years, but maybe we'll pull it out again soon. It sure would be nice to have a widescreen DVD release.

The first time I saw this was on the network showing that featured John Belushi hosting it in a bad Godzilla suit. I thought it was great back then and still like it today. I've actually always been a big Jet Jaguar fan, even if I did blow him up in my little movie. You always blow up the things you love, right? I also long to see a really decent R1 release of this.

This was also the first G-film I ever saw! We lived in Misawa on account my dad was an Air Force officer, my mom(RIP,tommorow is the 3rd anniversary of her passing)Her and I watched an absolutely pristine laserdisc version that even had production art for JJ(and the others ) as well an upgraded version of JJ and several monsters from the proposed JJ series where he and Godzilla and Angilas kept the denizens of monster island at bay and protected the world!!!! Don't get me wrong I LOVE Zone Fighter ALOT, but C'mon A Jet Jaguar series would've been the suppaa shizzunittu ;D
BTW I just got a great fanfic idea, must begin writing. Also, if I can find the laserdisc, I'll scan 'em and post 'em
P.S. Megalon is one of my all-time fave G-foes and Gigan, who is probably my top fave also blew me away(Didn't see GvsGigan till over a year later.

Outside of Angiris in GRA, Gigan is my favorite G villain.
I think there are complex copyright issues in regards to getting a legit R1 put out in the US. I don't know them offhand but I've seen it discussed a few times.

I saw this in the theater back in 76 when it came out. I used to have the 4 page mini comic that was about the movie which was pretty cool even with the Borodan and Robotman mistakes. I tape recorded the NBC Special with John Belushi as Godzilla so I could listen to the soundtrack of the movie later. If anyone wants to see the Godzilla suit John Belushi wore for it watch the movie Hollywood Boulevard. It's in there.

I was told it was because there had been SO many PD vhs and DVD versions of the movie released originally that they didn't pick it up for DVD release. perhaps in the publicity for the alleged 2012 movie we will finally get a good DVD release.Attachments:

Aha, I now present a special guest appearance post!
It has taken me a long time to warm up to this one--I have watched it only a few times, with rather long gaps in between. But I now understand this film, and it is a lot of fun! Perhaps it is still not among my favorite Godzilla films. But every puppy is a part of the litter, I think, even the scrawniest and weirdest.
Sometimes these things happen slowly...you know?
