Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened (2007)
Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened is the third game in a series of PC adventure games featuring Sherlock Holmes.
Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened comes in two version, the original which is played from the first person point of view (with some third person scenes) and the remastered version which allows the player to choose between first and third person.
I have the original version.
Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened places Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson in the world of of H.P. Lovecraft. Hired to investigate the disappearance of a rich man's aboriginal manservant, Holmes soon discovers that there has been a whole series of kidnappings, all of foreigners, and there have been no demands for ransoms. Holmes' investigation leads to the discovery of a cult which is planning to awaken the horrible creature it considers its god.
Holmes and Watson will travel from London, Switzerland and to the new world, New Orleans, and then back to London before going on to the coast of Scotland.
It takes some time to get used to this games odd controls. The mouse is used to point in the direction you want to look. Then you can use the left mouse button to move in that direction but its easier to use the up arrow key. Unlike most games with have a cursor on the screen at all times, even if its a "no-action" cursor, this game has no cursor until there is something you can manipulate, then a hand appears. There is no talk cursor, you just move close to another character and click the left mouse button. the right mouse button brings up your inventory which consist of five parts:
items
documents
reports
dialogue
map
All items other than documents go in items, even a few documents go there as well. Most documents will be placed in documents only. Holmes comments and the results of his chemicl analysis will go in reports. Most, though not all, conversations are recorded, in text, in the dialogue section. The map allows quick travel to areas you previously walked to. In London, Holmes can also take a hansom cab but it just brings up the map screen.
Most of the puzzles are the figure out what to use from inventory type. Several times Holmes will quiz Watson (Watson quizzes Holmes once) at which point the player has to type in the answer.
Why a picture of an Edelweiss suggests Switzerland and not Germany I don't know.
There's a cute scene in which Holmes and Watson meet a young boy named Hercule. There are several references to a French thief who will turn out to be Holmes' "Nemesis" in the next game.
Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened can be downloaded from Big Fish Games for $6.99. I'm not sure which version they have though.
