I'm really digging this series. It's not subbed, it's slow paced and has 5 story arcs spanning 130 episodes, but since I'm just watching it in the background while I work, it doesn't get too hard to watch. The cool thing is the look, feel and sound. This is really like a "what if the Japanese had filmed a pulp action thriller like The Shadow as a cliffhanger serial with super villains and monsters". It has a lot of mood, great lighting and location filming and the music even sounds like it's pulled from a Universal serial. The sad thing is that the R2s are a bit of a rip off on the 2-5 story arcs as there are just three half-hour episodes per disc ($5 per disk but then add another $4 or so -per, for shipping). The first story arc is 71 ten minute episodes (several eps are missing) and they put about 130 minutes of episodes on each disc which is a better deal. Most kaiju fans would want to go straight to the 3rd story arc (11 episodes), "Mammoth Kong" which has a giant gorilla type of thing in it. Though it seems more like a mutant yeti with tusks or something. I find it to actually be a much better looking simian than anything Tsuburaya-san was ever able to come up with. click the ape for more pics

I just watched the 1981 movie, and true to its reputation, it was awful. I'll stick with the original.
