He was 99. Brown's family said Monday he died at his Manhattan apartment. He created a number of radio programs that became immensely popular in the 1930s and '40s. Among his most well-known offerings was "Inner Sanctum Mysteries." The show opened with a signature sound effect of a creaking door. He was also producer of the 1400 episode CBS Radio Mystery Theatre in the 1970s. -DanRon Simon of the Paley Center for Media said Brown was "one of radio's great storytellers." Brown died Friday. He is survived by two children, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
