Just got back from the Johnny Carson Theater (so named because in his lifetime he donated money to the University of Nebraska Lincoln where it is and he left UNL more money in his will) where I saw the regional premiere of Happy Days: A New Musical. The director said it took him two years in talks with Garry Marshall to get the show. Except for the Happy Days theme song it was all original songs by Paul Williams.
Fonzie was played by a man originally from Milwaukee. Howard Cunningham was my cousin's husband. Marion Cunningham was the director's wife, she's in every TADA Theater production I think. At least she was in the four shows I've seen. Chachi was the youngest cast member at 15. Everybody did a good job. My sister thought the two Malachi brothers almost stole the show as they were so funny and had good voices too.
It was funny when Howard was trying to butter up the Fonz was talking about his "other son" and Fonzie said "you mean Chuck" and Howard stopped and looked confused for a moment before saying, "Oh him, we haven't heard from him in years."
The plot: Arnold's is going to be town down to make from for "a parking lot or something called a mall". Fonzie comes up with the idea of a dance contest to raise money to try to out bid the developer for the land. In case thats not enough Howard Cunningham thinks a wrestling match between the Malachie brothers and Fonzie would bring in more money.
Chachi and Joanie each want to date the other but don't know how to talk to each other. Lorie Beth is talking about weddings to Richie. And Pinky Tuscadero is back in town. She pretends not to be looking for Fonzie and he pretends not to care that she's back.
Richie is both narrator and a character in the story, he declares Fonzie to be the hero and Fonzie agrees.
