i have not seen this since Chris sent me a tape many MANY years ago (i bet over 10!) and it's really a cool movie. greedy businessmen and corrupt gov't officials plan to take over a tenement and demolish a shrine. this can't be good, and the Yokai show up.
gotta love the way the Yokai look. i'm sure some idiot somewhere wants to see them done in cg, but they'd sure lose their charm if so.

I'm interested to see Miike's version of Yokai Daisenso. I wonder if he'll be using much CGI in that. Since Miike likes stop motion and makeup effects, I don't think he *insists* on using CGI the way some out of control directors do. I thought his use of it in Zebraman was inoffensive, but it could come off as "less charming" if he does go CGI on many of the Yokai critters.

repost of my brief review from MZ If you are a fan of Miike's Zebraman then you'll love The GREAT YOKAI WAR. I found it to have very similar pacing, using lots of fast-paced action intermixed with sudden cuts to quiet scenes of charming philosophy or subtle comedy. The effects were great and the story was pretty straight forward. This was a really entertaining movie and if you are a fan of youkai and especially of Shigeru Mizuki you will find it to be really great since there are many references to Mizuki and his creation Gegege no Kitaro. In fact a couple of scenes take place at the town of Sakaiminato which is adorned in Kitaro statues and has the the Mizuki Youkai Museum/Gallery. Also though Kitaro does not show up (though I was starting to half expect it) many of his companions had mainstage performances such as Ittan Momen (the flying cloth), Nurikabe (a section of wall with eyes, hands and legs) and Konaki-Jiji (a guy with a large blue head who in traditional youkai folklore steals oil from oil-lamps). Also all the youkai you've ever seen in the 60s Daiei films make an appearance. Ok, let's all go drink a couple of cans of Kirin!

i just watched ALONG WITH GHOSTS, and it's my least favorite of the three movies. not bad, but a far different tone than the other two. some genuinely creepy moments tho!
the little girl does a good job.

just watched the GREAT YOKAI WAR and it was pretty fun. still a bit too long, but it doesn't meander nearly as much as ZEBRAMAN does. Tadashi's constant whining whimpers got a little too much at first, but at least that tapered off at the end.
and why is there never just a clean defeat of the villain? i mean, that's gotta be a dead cliche by now.
