first sequel for Godzilla, and really, the first giant monster vs giant monster fight ever. i enjoy the film- either version- a lot. it was the last "old" Godzilla film i ever got to see (thanks to USA channel in the 80s running a Godzilla marathon) but oddly enough, one of the first i ever owned on VHS.
i'll always call it Gigantis!

No matter my mood, this is always one of my top 3 Godzilla movies. I truly don't understand the hate it gets. The tooth-n-claw battles are amazing (even if undercranked instead of over cranked) and the human drama is more interesting in a down to earth way in GRA than in almost any of the other entries in the franchise.
It has its faults, but what godzilla movie doesn't?

There isn't a film made that doesn't have its faults.

I've only seen the originl Japanese version (Godzilla Raids Again) with English subtitles. How does Angilas become a fire monster?

I like both versions of this movie, but it's not one of my favorites. I actually find the US version more entertaining in a humorous way but Godzilla looks rather goofy when seen from the front. I love Angilas however and the savage battles here are among the best in the series. I just feel mediocre about it as a whole for some reason. What really annoys me about the US version is that Angilas' roar is dubbed in for Godzilla almost all the time! I haven't been able to pick up the new Classic Media disc yet (or any of the other ones except GOJIRA/KING OF MONSTERS)and I am anxious to see if it's as good as the GOJIRA disc. There are several nice figures from this movie-Bandai released a limited edition set of the 6 inch 1955 Godzilla done in translucent white and blue vinyl(to simulate Godzilla's frozen fate from the end of the movie) and the 6 inch Angilas that is translucent red vinyl to simulate his fiery end. The Angilas figure is the 1968 version though and not the 1955 version. Marmit released a really nice 9 inch sized 1955 Angilas figure as part of their Monster Heaven line. it is very detailed and comes in at least 2 color versions-a standard blue one and a totally psychedelic version molded in hot pink vinyl with brown and purple paint spray! Marmit also released a nice 6 inch 1955 Godzilla and Angilas set as part of their Vinyl ParaBaby line. These are nicely detailed and somewhat between the old Marusan style and the more realistic Bandai designs. X Plus released very nice detailed 12 inch solid resin prepainted models of the 1955 versions of both Godzilla and Angilas a few years ago. They had interlocking bases so when displayed together they appear to be fighting.

I think I'm on one of the only people who liked the American version better than the Japanese. I don't know, the 50's monster stock music (cribbed from It! The Terror from Beyond Space) and the stock footage during the film scene did it for me. For a long time, it was a real lesser Godzilla film to me. I like it a bit more now. I remember that there was a time when this film was shown on the Disney channel almost every week!

neither of 'em are great shakes, but i'll watch the US one as well, simply because i don't have to read it.
Angilas is just called a fire monster because they lived below the surface of the Earth in lava.
or something ever so scientific!
