this was the first widescreen Toho sci-fi movie, looks great that way. Mysteroid invades Earth, wants some of our women and land. lots of destruction and cool effects.
the DVD is pretty good, though it has an awful new dub instead of the original US one.
later remade poorly as MARS NEEDS WOMEN.

For years, I watched this movie in faded condition. Then I got the DVD and realized how amazing it really looked.
The story is OK; it really is more of a special effects extravaganza. I do agree with David, that the bad part of the DVD is removing the good English dub and replacing it with a poor one. That is one reason I've kept my old VHS copy! If I want to watch the DVD, I'll see it in the Japanese or Spanish language versions. The Spanish dub, I thought, was superior to the English one!

I remember vividly how I got this film. When I began my Toho streak in the 3rd Grade, I was going to get this film as one of my b-day presents (along with Godzilla vs. Megalon). However, my brother wanted me to ask for a Sega Game, Golvellius, instead. So he and our neighbor Tom told me how much that movie sucked so that I would ask for Golvellius instead. So I didn't watch the Mysterians until the next year when I bought it at SamGoody (or whatever it was before).
I remember showing that film to my 5th grade class (who detested me for bringing Japanese sci-fi to class on movie Fridays). Quite a few heads turned when Yumi Shirakawa got out of the tub and there was a bare leg shot. hehehe

This is probably my favorite non-G Toho movie. This was also the first Japanese SF movie I ever taped back in August of 1985 on a local UHF Saturday afternoon showing. The only US made film that comes close to the spectacle of this film is WAR OF THE WORLDS which won an Oscar for FX though I think Tsuburaya's work here is far superior to Pal's film! Plus we also get one of Ifukube's finest scores, absolutely great stuff all around, one of Toho's best films.

i'm watching this DVD now, and it really does look great. i don't miss the dub too much, since this new one is so horrible as to not bother with it at all.
the end battle is just awesome.

I believe the climactic battle in this film tops the battles in George Pal's WAR OF THE WORLDS.Pal's fim was great however this film was more spectacular, though admittedly WAR OF THE WORLDS is a better film overall mianly due to it's dramatic content.

Uh ...... Can I say that while this movie looks great nd has Mogera and all that and yeah it's a Toho flick that I'm really not that hard about it? Kinda ... well .... boring. (Not the end though, that's awesome) Dunno can't see the big deal about this one and not something like LEGEND OF THE DINOSAURS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Right Dave

i'll not rise to your bait with comparing dinos to Mysterians! i bet if i had seen this at a younger age i would like it more, but just the memory of almost seeing it is nice.
