this is of course, the American version, since i prefer that one to the snoozefest that is the original- not that either are great shakes, but when Varan is not on the screen, it's not a very good movie.
great score for the original version, though.

The scenes of Varan causing destruction are excellent and this is a sentimental favorite for me. It does take quite a while to really get going though. I still have it on VHS, I think from Goodtimes.
David, remember the old 8mm version with the Little Rascals short in front of it - SPOOKY HOOKY? I think we talked about that at the old board.

I really, really liked the monster itself, if not so much the movie. Varen was just a neat looking creature. I also kept the VHS version only because that is the one I grew up watching. No matter what one may think about the Myron Healy version, it does exist, and really shouldn't be ignored. David, remember the old 8mm version with the Little Rascals short in front of it - SPOOKY HOOKY? I think we talked about that at the old board. Now that is one 8mm I didn't catch!

i have that 8mm on my DVDr that i made of the US version, as a bonus. even added some music from the soundtrack! Bradley sure comes across as a dink in the movie though, even to his wife. and there are some awesome shots of the monster in the movie, that's for sure, just really cool looking.

This is definitely a case of the monster being WAY cooler than the movie! I do prefer the Japanese version only because of the unedited Ifukube score(one of his best) and Varan retaining his original and very cool roar(plus his flying squirrel scenes!). The US version is still alot of fun and the new score by genre vet Albert Glasser(who scored most of Bert I Gordon's films) is good. The Media Blasters disc of the Japanese version is excellent too-I love the interview and monster building demonstration with Takeo Murase! I never would have guessed that varan's back spines were just lengths of transparent tubing sliced into pointed spikes! I still think it's a shame that Toho didn't let Kaneko make his original idea for GMK and have Godzilla battle Baragon, Varan and Angilas.

It took about 2 or 3 tries for me to watch the American version without distracting myself with some other task. I probably would've enjoyed it a lot more if they'd kept the original score and his roar. But they didn't, and as a result, the movie became incredibly boring to me.

I loved that segment as well and it showed how resourceful these guys were in regards to suit making. I probably would've enjoyed it a lot more if they'd kept the original score and his roar. But they didn't, and as a result, the movie became incredibly boring to me. They should have definitely keep Ifkube's score, especially that great opening theme, though you do hear some snippets of Ifkube's music in the Myron Healy version.
