i just got this fine disc from a friend of mine and it's amazing the quality this disc has. it's a great picture, has the original HK dub (some of those voices are so familiar) has a subtitled option AND a commentary track from Akira Kubo that has subs. it's amazing. it also has an interview with Teruyoshi Nakano which is about a half an hour. picture is great and the sound is good. anyone else see this yet? anyone want my DVD of Mushroom People? i sure like that title though!

How is the plot? I have that near the bottom of my Netflix list. I may get to it in about 20 years.

it's a good story- 7 people go out on a small boat for a three hour tour... no wait, that's not exactly it... there are seven people, and 5 men and two women. they get blown off course by a storm and end up on a mysterious island. there is no real food there but strange mushrooms and lots of wrecked ships. things unfold in a strange and creepy and genuinely scary way, and yet there is no blood or gore. it's very cool and has a "twist" ending that most people know about but when i saw it as a kid i sure didn't see it coming. i think you will like it. you can let us know in 20 years!

My copy arrived about a week ago, and I haven't had a chance to watch it yet (already watched the film on Creature Double Feature & DVD-R). I've been busy with a slew of other films. I bought import copies of Galaxy of Terror, The Dead Pit, and the Amicus Coffin box set that includes Asylum, And Now the Screaming Starts, Beast Must Die, House That Dripped Blood, and Dr. Terror's House of Horrors, a film that I now own three copies of! I bought the set for the first two films anyway, as they are OOP on Region 1.
I also watched Shaun of the Dead and the colorized version of Night of the Living Dead from Off-Color Films, which features an audio commentary track by Mike Nelson from Mystery Science Theater 3000. Very funny, nice to see MST3K still exists in some form. Shaun was a good watch too. Weren't we talking about Matango? Good to hear the quality is high. The DVD-R I had was a widescreen print, but the audio was lacking and the picture was a bit grainy.

i like it a lot, and like i said, it's scary without being gorey, something most modern "horror" movies don't seem to be able to accomplish these days.

I saw it yesterday! First in Japanese, then in English, then with the audio track. I'm all matango at the moment. Have you noticed the difference between the Japanese and the English dub at the end of the movie. Looks like when the movie was translated, someone went like "ehhh ... what the heck is this ending about?" and they decided to give the dialog a better meaning. It's more effective than the Japanese ending, in my opinion. Anyway, that's a great DVD and every fan should support Media Blasters by buying it!

It makes me salivate over the pnding releases of VARAN and DOGORA! Really, these Media Blasters DVDs are first-class product. I thoroughly enjoyed both the MATANGO and MYSTERIANS discs. Haven't watched all of the extras on MATANGO though.

For some reason, Best Buy seems to stock this DVD in the Action section. So be on the lookout for it there.

"Rated PG for adult situations and some intense mushroom action" yeah right.
This is kinda off topic, but I remember this was on TV a lot in the 70's, and one day I was visiting one of the local kids' houses, and we had "Attack of the Mushroom People" on the TV, in a dark room, while we played with the lightsaver knockoff toys known as "The Force Beam"......this was a non-licensed ripoff toy that was basically a red plastic flashlight with a hollow plastic tube attached, and a green or red lens inside to color the light that lit up the tube. They looked great in the dark.
Can't find those things now. I looked! Nothin' on Ebay.
We really liked the Meco "Star Wars" disco theme at that time too!

i have that disco Star Wars on CD now. it's pretty funny to listen to though. and we did have whatever light saber knockoff that was out, quickly destroyed by about 1,000 battles in 2 days.
movie is still quite good.

I just watched Matango, Japanese with English subtitles. Then I checked the ending dubbed in English. If the subtitles are accurate than I don't get the Japanese ending. Was it just because he was touched by them?

according the the dub, he ate them before he got picked up. a neat twist ending that, at age 10 i did NOT see coming.

I know what the English dubbed version said, but the subtitled version says he did not. So what happened to his face if that's the case?

Just some interesting superfluvia www.imdb.com/title/tt0714219/Alfred Hitchcock's "Suspicion" The Voice in the Night (1958) Episode 24 of 42 Directed by Arthur Hiller
Writing credits William Hope Hodgson (story) Stirling Silliphant
Episode Cast (in alphabetical order)
James Coburn .... Carson James Donald .... Thomason Patrick Macnee .... Biersdorf Barbara Rush .... Eleanor
"This is a very faithful rendition of the short story by William Hope Hodgson. James Coburn and Barbara Rush are shipwrecked, and find their way to an island where an unusual fungus has taken over everything. Finally they find a small beach where the fungus cannot grow. Most of the story is the narration of Coburn's character to a passing ship. The mystery is that he refuses rescue, and only asks for some food. Of course the reason for his odd behavior becomes clear at the end. I first heard this story when my mother read it in a collection of short stories edited by Alfred Hitchcock, and titled "Stories They Wouldn't Let Me Put on TV." Oddly enough, we saw this teleplay a few weeks later. I managed to find it again by chance in the early 1960's when it was re-broadcast as a time-filler by a local station. The story always stayed with me, and looking at the credits today (Director Arthur Hiller, writer Stirling Silliphant), it is easy to see why. This was a very well done production, and I would jump at the chance to see it again."If anyone knows of a way to find/access this episode of Suspicion, let me know. I'd love to get ahold of this.
