remember the last board's insane Megalon discussion?
not that we have to have one like that, but i'd sure like to see this movie come out on Sony DVD.

Definitely! This seems to be the only availible Showa G film Sony hasn't released yet that I know of. Of course, Sony also needs to release discs of MOTHRA, BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE, H-MAN & REBIRTH OF MOTHRA 3. I'd also like to see them re-release widescreen versions of VS KING GHIDORAH and VS MOTHRA. Now what's the difference between the Sony label that released the UPA/Paramount titles a few years ago and the Columbia/TriStar/Sony label?? I mean aside from quality of the realeases of course! I heard that the other Sony label was going to re-release the former G movies this year in high quality form like the other Sony discs -widescreen with both english and Japanese versions plus they also got the rights to GIGANTIS and GHIDRAH from Toho( both of which are long overdue on disc!). So let's add MEGALON to the group Sony! Too bad someone like Retromedia couldn't afford the rights from Toho as they could make a great fun disc that came with a repro of the 4 page comic that was given away at drive-ins and theaters or maybe even the cool buttons(they had one for each of the 4 monsters!).

Yeah, it's be nice to see good ole' Godzilla vs. Megalon on DVD, in pristine, un-cut form. The same with Gigantis and Ghidrah (Japanese and U.S. versions, so long as they're widescreen). I don't think we'll have to wait forever though. It doesn't seem likely that Sony or Classic Media, or whoever is handling the series, would hold out on these titles for any other reason other than laziness. Though, doesn't Toho have serious reservations about letting anyone release Megalon because of the negative reputation it gives the franchise? I heard that somewhere.

According to an article I read (I need to look it up), the DVD rights to MEGALON are owned by Goodtimes or whoever has the rights to Goodtimes' holdings. The delay in the re-releases of the Classic Media discs is due to legal and rights issues, but they WILL be coming. Ah, found the link : www.tokyomonsters.com/news417.php

well, i made my own, complete with various trailers. it's from the Sci-Fi broadcast, which seems a bit edited to me- not nearly like the ones on tape we've had, but little bits here and there.
and Sci-Fi still has the "action!" scene in it!

I did the same thing using Sci-Fi's version along with the full-screen Cinema Shares version on the same disc. I compared sci-Fi's print to the widescreen print that aired on British TV that has the "action" scene corrected and the British print is alot brighter-you can see alot more detail in the image but the sci-fi print has more picture information on each side of the screen. I hope this gets a good release like the other films have so we get a high quality widescreen print already!

I don't understand this one myself. Megalon is certainly treated like the red-headed stepchild of the Godzilla legacy, but I always liked it as a kid and think most fans like it as well. I'd like to see a Columbia/TriStar release of it, since they've done such a good job so far.

I concur with what you guys have said. "Godzilla vs. Megalon" is not one of my favorites. However, it is one Godzilla movie that holds special place in my memories, as it was the first G-film I saw in the theaters (1976, we are talking 30 years now! ) and really enjoyed it back then. Heck, that was probably the last time I saw it in it's completed form.

as i've said, as bad as kino was, it did get us some cool stuff back then. it may not be the greatest Godzilla movie, but it sure made an impact on me. i was desperate for giant heroes and monsters, and that's one thing this movie delivers in spades. way fun.

It was my third Godzilla movie. Got it for my bday when I was in third grade. The last fight was great, although I always thought (and think now) that there was too little "G". Great monster grappling though.

sadly, Sony doesn't "own" the rights, so it may still be a while before we get a nice quality DVD of Megalon. too bad.
