A few quick questions:
Does Ogasawara Island exist? I've heard that it doesn't, but a few current atlases that I've seen have it.
Odo Island didn't exist did it? Did the original give any possible location as to its (relative location)?
The American version of Daikaiju Baran took place in Kunashirashima (or something like that). Does that place exist? If so, where is it?

i can say that Ogasawara Islands exist, since that's where the recent giant squid footage was shot. the other two i have doubts about. if Odo island did exist we would have heard about it two years ago, what with the Godzilla birthday celebration and all.

The Ogasawara Island group does exist(Western mariners refered to them in the 1800's as the Bonin Islands);the terrible, tragic&costly WWII battle of Iwo Jima took place in the nearby Kazan(Volcano)Islands.

In reverse order :
* At first, the only references to the island of "Kunishiroshima" I found were in relation to the American VARAN. Then, I ran a search for "Kunishiro Island" and discovered that one of the Kuril Islands (most commonly called Kunashiri) has been referred to as "Kunishiro". Now, this island can't be the ACTUAL setting of VARAN (due to the fact that the Soviets had laid a claim to it after WWII), but it could be the source of the name.
* "Odo Island" was the American corruption of "Oto-shima" in GOJIRA. I found a couple of pages that seem to indicate that it is an actual island, but nothing that I would deem concrete. (One placed it off the coast of Shikoku, but also placed Oshima there rather than off the coast of Honshu - I therefore have my doubts). If there is an Oto, it is probably either one of the Izu Islands or one of the Ogasawara Islands.
* Ah, Ogasawara. As David and Danny have already mentioned, there is more than one - Ogasawara Retto in Japanese. It's thanks to William Ross' Toho International dub (which served as a guide for the AIP dub) that everyone thinks there's only one. In fact, they get mentioned again in TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA. The Japanese version calls them "Ogasawara" while the Hong Kong-produced dub calls them "the Bonin Islands."
As Danny also mentioned, Io-jima (a.k.a. Iwo Jima) was the site of one of the fiercest battles of WWII. It's probably the best known of the islands in the West.
All of the Ogasawara islands fall under the Tokyo government. Since many are unihabited and relatively remote, they were a logical choice for a location for the fictional Monsterland center.
