The founding generation celebrated with bonfires, firing guns and shooting off cannons. Lighting a bonfire in this town would get you busted by the fire marshal (same jerk who hates fireworks), firing a gun in the air (even with blanks) will get you arrested for illegal discharge of a firearm. I don't know for sure, but possession of a cannon is probably a felony. In many places the nanny state we now live in won't even allow a "lady'sfinger". If it goes bang or lifts off the ground its illegal in Lincoln even though Nebraska state law allows for inch and a half firecrackers. Worse in Omaha though, they don't allow anything. My neighbors don't pay the slightest attention to Lincoln's fireworks ordinances. There will be lots of bangs the first few days of July. Some will have bottle rockets (illegal). I've never been interested in those.
There used to be parades and speech making. Have you ever heard anyone read the Declaration out loud? Have you even read it for yourself (I have also the Constitution). I rode in the Bicentennial parade (that was in 1976 for those who can't count) dressed as a frontiersman. I almost had heatstroke in that hot costume.
Absolutely no one on TV or radio will wish a "Happy Independence Day" it will be "Happy Fourth of July". Won't be long before its "Merry December 25th", which is equally as meaningless.
I better stop before I start getting religious and political.
