Definitely, Happy New Year to all and may 2008 be well for everyone! Unfortunately, in 2008, yours truly turns the big 4 0! Hey, I’m not alone. Look at all the famous people in the same boat with me this year, which I could take some comfort with - Will Smith, Daniel Craig, Naomi Watts, Brendan Fraser, Gillian Anderson, Cuba Gooding, Jr. Rachel Ray and Parker Posey. And all of the movies as well turning that certain age - Planet of the Apes, 2001, Rosemary’s Baby, Night of the Living Dead, Destroy All Planets, AND Destroy All Monsters!

Happy New Year, all! Can someone tell me if we're actually starting a new decade or if that doesn't kick in until next year? I'm totally confused (which doesn't take much) as I've heard some folks say it is and others it isn't.

New decade bro. the 0 counts as a year. We did our ten years from 2000-09. Hope y'all have a great and blessed one!

Thanks RoadWarrior. That's was I thought too. Still, I've heard snippets of people on the radio saying the new decade doesn't start until 2011 (I always seem to miss their explanation for it). I don't understand how they figure that. As you said, 2000 was the beginning of a new decade (as well as the new century), so it sure seems 2010 would be a new decade. I tried googling this situation and there are debates on many forums. Some say you can't have a year 0 and that a decade begins when it hits 1. I'm so confused!

actually, there was no year "0", we started in the year 1 AD, so each real decade is 1-10, 11-20, etc. same as the century is 1 to 100, 101 to 200, and the millennium is 1001 to 2000 (there was a reason Arthur C. Clarke chose the title 2001: A Space Odyssey).
so the decade does not end until Dec. 31.
however, if you want to look at it, the "00"s ended this year. that was a decade, just not THE decade.Attachments:
