I’m fairly sure this is the first Paul Naschy film I’ve ever seen. They were never broadcast in the Philadelphia area or I would have picked up on them. All I can say is WOW! I really liked it. (watched it twice already) Thanks David for making this possible. I owe you buddy. The creepy atmosphere and creative photography in FBT are worthwhile alone, but Paul Naschy’s Waldemar Daninsky deserves to be listed in the Werewolf Hall of Fame. He rocks. Mr. Naschy intended the role for Lon Chaney Jr., but when that fell through it was suggested he tackle it himself. The influence of FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLFMAN is evident, as the film inspired him at a young age. It’s easy to feel sympathy for Waldemar as we do for Larry Talbot, and that’s due to Paul Naschy’s interpretation. A good guy afflicted through a tragic turn of events. The transformation scenes are superb, with intense music, clever film work and believable agony. This werewolf is very frightening and full of animal savagery. FBT is a blast, giving us a total of 2 werewolves and 2 vampires. An interesting concept. I look forward to checking out more of Mr. Naschy’s work, especially the many returns of Waldemar.

Yes. I used PowerDVD to capture the images and Adobe PhotoDeluxe to clean em up a bit.

Now this is a sign that everything is settling down at the New Xeno. People are sitting down in front of the fire (with a mug of warm October cider) and talking about Paul Naschy.
This guy was one of my late-night TV initiations into the world of 60's and 70's horror films. Sam Sherman and Al Adamson released "Frankenstein's Bloody Terror" in the states, adding a weird animated prologue explaining the word "Frankenstein" in the title. Supposedly (and this sounds about right, for Independent International) they "created" the Frankenstein title to calm exhibitors down when "Dracula vs. Frankenstein" started missing completion deadlines.
I vividly remember seeing this in 1974 or thereabouts, at 11:00 one dark night, and scratching my head at the confusing opening.
I bought a wonderful "double feature" disc of THE SCREAMING SKULL (a non-Naschy film) and THE WEREWOLF VS. VAMPIRE WOMAN last year for five bucks. It's amazing the stuff you can find on the bargain racks sometimes. Pour me one of those ciders, will ya?

Lunkhead, how do you do video captures with PowerDVD? (I is lame)
Amph, I dunno if his name means anything to you, but that animated title sequence was done by comic book artist (and designer for Bakshi-produced SPIDER-MAN) Gray Morrow. As near as I can gather, that story about DRACULA VS. FRANKENSTEIN is true. The movie's original title was to have been BLOOD OF FRANKENSTEIN and the Naschy film was substituted and given a similar title. When they finally reworked BLOOD into something they could release, they had added Dracula, so they went with the more commercial DRACULA VS. FRANKENSTEIN.

i love the opening- it's SO serious that you just have to believe it, although no one in the movie is ever called "Wolfstein" at all.

Chris, I have PowerDVD XP (Version 4.0). If you have the same version, look for the small camera icon on the lower left of the player controls. Click on it to capture an image from a DVD. (Actually, you'll want to pause the DVD first and step through until you have the exact image you want. Then click the camera icon). The default setting captures the image to the clipboard. You can change PowerDVD to capture the image to a BMP file instead by clicking on the configuration tool (on the lower right - it has a "T" and picture of a little hammer). Then, on the "General" tab, click "Advanced". On the "Capture" tab, you can specify how and/or where to capture the image to a file.

Gray Morrow...no, I wasn't aware of that artist. Did he also do most of Independent International's animated titles (like the Blood Island movies, etc.)? The style looked pretty consistent from one to the other...it almost defined the look of early 70's horror for me...lurid, watery, distorting images...

Amph, I think I've seen that DVD at Best Buy. Is it one of the Madacy Drive-In disks? I'll have to look for it again. Is THE WEREWOLF VS. VAMPIRE WOMAN as much fun as FBT?

thanks Lunk! WWVSVW is pretty fun, but look for the REAL letterboxed version, which has a different name but is uncut, unlike the most readily available version.

Here's a long rant:
I saw some frame-grabs of the uncut, letterboxed Werewolf vs Vampire Woman, and yes, it looked real tasty...but I got that cheapie double feature (with Screaming Skull) at Bestbuy, because it was so reasonable...
Luckily, I know a local expert on Molina, and he's got a whole library of the stuff, it's amazing.
The cheapo double-disc has trailers and extra garbage on it, and is packaged with a "drive-in" motif, so if you want to spend less and get less, I think it's pretty nice...plus, I am liking these cheesy multi-movie discs more and more...
I have one of those discs that have four movies on one single-sided disc, all heavily compressed and low-res, but the films (Devil's Nightmare, Snowbeast, Moon of the Wolf and Night Train to Terror) aren't so hot to begin with, so you might say they don't deserve better. That was five bucks too, can ya believe it?
But I did get the Shriek Show "Zombi 2" recently, which was also reasonably priced at Bestbuy ($14.99), and wow, that's got a whole lotta great stuff on it. The really clear and overly bright transfer has been criticized by some, and I agree that this transfer is lacking in shadows, but the whole package together, I think, is a nice job.

Chris, check this link from the Cyberlink (PowerDVD) website => www.gocyberlink.com/english/cs/support/faq.jsp?ProdId=1&ID=202It mentions the screen capture function is included with versions 1.2 and above. There is a tutorial link there which references version 4.0 (not sure if that's the version you have). You can also try looking at "Help" on your player and do a search on "capture". It might be setup differently on previous versions. Also, you could try emailing support throught the website www.gocyberlink.com/english/cs/support/index_tech.jsp. It says you have to register a free user account first in order to do that. Hope this helps.

I prefer the original version of the film MARK OF THE WOLFMAN since it includes twenty more minutes crucial to character development. It sets off a love triangle in the film, plus it is Naschy's character Daninsky who tells the gypsies to seek refuge in the mansion where he knows the body of a werewolf lies. After the werewolf is revived he finds the bodies of the gypsies near the tomb with the silver cross dagger and thus assumes the guilt of the deaths the werewolf has already caused since being revived. When another villager is assigned to patrol the mansion's grounds Naschy switches places with him, hoping to atone for his "misdeed" and keep anyone else from finding out about the werewolf. The American version diminishes alot of this by omitting the firsttwenty minutes.

that does help, but it's not really necessary for the film. i've seen the subbed version once (very good condition my butt!) and while it was nice seeing it letterboxed, i like this one more. perhaps they should have trimmed the 20 minutes instead of completely omitting it.
