Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (1942)
This version stars Spencer Tracy as Dr. Harry Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Why they changed the doctor's first name fron Henry to Harry I don't know. Spence Tracy apparently couldn't figure it out either because although the credits show "Harry", the other characters say "Harry" and the doctor signs his letters "Harry", Tracy calls himself "Henry" every time he speaks his full name.
The first scene between Jekyll and Ivy is tammer than the '32 version. Also Ivy's dies behind a couch so we can't see Hyde strangle her.
There is nothing abnormal about Hyde's appearance. He just has different hair, eye brows, wrinkles than Jekyll. He's still recognizable as Spencer Tracy, except of course to the characters who have to follow the script which says he's not. There really isn't much difference between Jekyll and Hyde in this version. Hyde just does things Jekyll is afraid to do. March made me feel sorry for Jekyll, Tracy never did.
This version was an MGM production. Both the Paramount 1932 and this version were on the same DVD, one on each side. The 1932 version is better. The 1920 silent version starrying Lionel Barrymore is better than both.
I'm done with Jekyll andHyde, unless I find the Abott and Costello movie. My next horror film with be the original "Frankenstein" .
EDIT:
I forgot this 1942 version had some odd dream sequenes. As Jekyll was becoming Hyde for the first time Jekyll is seen drving two horses which then transform into two women, his fiancee Beatrice and the bar maid Ivy. Oddly Beatrice wakes up from a dream and shows up at Jekyll's home looking for him because she sensed that she was losing him. He denies it at this point. Later when Jekyll becomes Hyde so he can go after Ivy we see a bottle containg Ivy being uncorcked.
