I picked up these DVDs for $1 (plus tax) each at Best Buy. The Ghoul (1934) stars Boris Karloff. Phantom Ship (1935) stars Bela Lugosi . They're both labeled as "CULT CLASSICS". I don't think I've seen either.
I also bought some more of those $9.99 "Midnite Movies" double feature DVDs, my favorite disaster movie and 3 WWII dramas.

PHANTOM SHIP is a British movie made in the late thirties. The original title is "Mystery of the Mary Celeste." It's a pretty cool movie. Lugosi gives an excellent performance. I've heard about THE GHOUL (as with every other horror movie ever made! ), but have never seen it. Let us know what you think.

The Ghoul (1933)
Boris Karloff - Professor Morlant Cedric Hardwicke - Broughton Ernest Thesiger- Laing Dorothy Hyson - Betty Harlon Anthony Bushell - Ralph Morlant Kathleen Harrison - Kaney Harold Huth - Aga Ben Dragore D.A. Clarke-Smith - Mahmoud Ralph Richardson - Nigel Hartley
According to the Internet Movie database this is the first British horror film with sound.
Eygptologist Professor Morlant actually believes in the Eygptian deities. Upon his death bed he orders his servant, Laing, to bury him with "The Light of Eternity", a Egyptian scarab which he belives can grant him immortality, even after he is dead. Laing, who doesn't hold to his master's "heathen" ideas disobeys the professor and takes the "valuable" scarab from his tomb with the intention of turning it over to his employeer's heirs. The professor's lawyer, Broughton, wants the scarab for himself. Also after the scarab is an egyptian, Aga Ben Dragore, who wants it returned to the tomb from which it was originally stolen, and the professor's niece, Betty Harlon and nephew, Ralph Morlant, who don't know what they are looking for, only that something valuable is hidden somewhere in the professor's house. Just along for the ride is Betty's friend Kaney, who falls for Dragore. Why the local parson, Nigel Hartley, who objeted to the profesor's "pagan" funeral is hanging around the professor's house is unclear.
On the night of a fullmoon Professor Morlant leaves his tomb, to search for his missing scarab.
Although Morlant is the monster, the real villain of this film is Broughton, the lawyer :-) Cedric Hardwicke who made a career out of playing villains appears in several of Universal's monster films.
The two cousins can't stand each other, so of course they fall in love.
The $1 DVD has no menu, just automatically plays the movie. I suppose its worth a buck.
