It is being reported that UNIVERSAL studios is remaking the WOLFMAN with alleged WOLFMAN movie buff Benicio del Toro in the lead.Execs are hoping that once Del Toro dons his werewolf fangs movie audiences will finally be able to understand what he's saying.

weak and lame. aside from most werewolf movies being nearly the same story, this is just a pathetic attempt at "modernizing" something that doesn't need it.
how about a sequel, and make it Talbot vs Daninski?

There you go. Make a new movie about two werewolves, one a northgoing werewolf and the other a southgoing werewolf, and they square off to decide who will rule a small English town. "Werewolf Ultimate Challenge" will be bigger than any monster combo yet devised.

Couldn't they at least remake this as a musical?

Considering the resounding failure of VAN HELSING both financially and artistically, I'm really surprised Universal is even considering this! Maybe they'll learn from their mistakes and go the opposite direction as VAN HELSING and make this as a true homage to their classic films and shoot it in black and white with art design like the original film and use the old-style Jack Pierce design for the Wolf Man instead of a monstrous CGI wolf behemoth and actually have the character be Lawrence Talbot. Somehow I doubt it though, unless Tim Burton was directing it, but I don't see any other director having both the clout and the talent to do that, and frankly, Tim Burton's talent seems to have slipped in the past decade. Maybe if he did this around 1990 or so, but not today. Johnny Depp would be Lawrence Talbot..umm, no. But then again, I can't see Benicio DelToro as Talbot either. There's actually a perfectly good story already out there for Universal to use-the 1998 novel RETURN OF THE WOLFMAN by Jeff Rovin which very effectively brings the classic Universal versions of Talbot, Dracula and frankie into the modern world yet remains faithful to the characters and the loose continuity of the original series as well.

If you want to borrow it, I'll put it in with the Max dvds, just say the word. There are two sequels to the book as well, but they weren't written by Jeff Rovin and didn't remain as true to the original characters, at least in the second book, I never managed to get the third. Also, the main characters are Dracula's daughter who is trying to revive the Bride of Frankenstein and the grandson of the Werewolf of London with Dracula and the Monster making only guest appearances at the books finale. The neatest thing about the books though is they are loaded with references to other Universal movies and they use alot of the secondary characters from the films in the samesort of roles here. They manage to mention the Creature and the Deadly Mantis, explain the Invisible Man's "appearance" at the end of A&C MEET FRANKY , go into rumors about what happened to Chick Young and Wilbur Grey, all of which involve other A&C movies and in the second book, Drac's daughter explains her partnership with a certain Hjalmer Poelzig and how they obtained the Bride but were unable to revive her. I really loved the first book alot better though as Lawrence Talbot has always been my favorite Universal character and the WolfMan my favorite Universal monster. Larry's reactions to the modern world and things like rap "music" and cell phones are great.

Alrighty! Let's get this over with! Even though I like the idea of Benicio Del Toro playing a man conflicted with lycanthropy (I think he can slip into the part real well), Universal really needs to grow some balls, and do something different. I liked the Mummy movies, but that's only because I'm a fan of Rachel Weisz (For those who've yet to see her Oscar-winning performance in The Constant Gardener, do so. It's a damn-fine performance and movie.). And Van Helsing, I've yet to see, but from what I hear, it's dogsh*t, so I dunno. Oh, and for those of you who are fuming that Universal is remaking the Wolfman, guess what else they have in the works? You guessed it! A REMAKE OF THE CREATURE!! <<crickets chirping (and rightfully so)>>

Weird... Someone was just telling me about this...
WHY?!? OH DEAR GOD WHY?!?
Until they start making actual legitimate sequels to the original series - in black and white, with the same feel, themes and tone - rather than modern remakes, count me out.
But those novels do sound kind of interesting... Hmm...

Universal owns the Wolf Man so we gotta deal with it. I can only hope that if Del Toro is the Wolfman buff they say he is he'll wear make up rather than giving us an unconvincing CGI werewolf.

well, if it's the wolfMAN, then he should be in that mold- Chaney, Naschy, Reed, etc. much cooler than the cartoony cg wolves.
