The Cat People (1942)
Produced by Val Letwon
Simone Simon - Irena Dubrovna Reed
Kent Smith - Oliver Reed
Tom Conway - Dr. Louis Judd
Jane Randolph - Alice Moore
Jack Holt - The Commodore
Dynamite - The leopard (uncredited)
Val Lewton had two phobias both of which are in this film. He did not like to be touched and he was afraid of cats.
Irena Dubrovna raised in a Serbian village in which the people believe that there are women who in the hight of passion transform into black panther like cats, is afraid to have relationships with other people. However you eventially falls in love with and marries ship designer Oliver Reed. Afraid that she will turn into a panther and kill him she refuses to even kiss him, asking for time to get over her fears. He grants her request. Oliver Reed works very closely with Alice Moore, who's in love with him. Time does nothing to reduce Irena's fears it only destroys Oliver's love for her. When Irena becomes jealous of Alice, Alice is stalked by a large cat.
Is Irena actually transforming into a black panther and attempting to kill her rival? You'll have to see the film to find out. It 73 minutes its shorter than current films. It is of course in b/w.
Understated horror, not until the end do we actually see the black panther attack someone.
Available in the The Val Lewton Horror Collection (Cat People / The Curse of the Cat People, I Walked with a Zombie / The Body Snatcher, Isle of the Dead / Bedlam, The Leopard Man / The Ghost Ship, The Seventh Victim / Shadow in the Dark: The Val Lewton Legacy, Val Lewton The Man In The Shadows). Which I bought on impulse. I don't think I've seen any of his films before.
Followed by Curse of the Cat People, also starring Simone Simon (ghost of Irena), Kent Smith and Jane Randolph (Mr and Mrs Reed).
