Living in Africa, young Jill Young trades her money, necklace and father's flashlight for a baby gorilla which she names Joe. Tweleve years later Hollywood promoter Max O'Hara talks the now grown up Jill into allowing him to make the now grown up, and extra large, gorilla the star of his night club show. The exploited gorilla eventually escapes and destroys the nightclub.
I had seen a rerelease of this in a theater, but it was so long ago I didn't remember much about the film, except that I liked it. Watching the DVD I enjoyed it again.
Mighty Joe Young is available on DVD, bundled with "King Kong" and "Son of Kong" or on its own.
DVD feature the full 94 minute version of the film (apparently it was cut to 84 minutes in US theaters), audio commentary by Ray Harryhausen, Ken Ralston and Terry Moore, video interview between Ray Harryhausen and The Chioda Brothers.
Remade in 1998.

i saw this for the first time on tv in San Diego, back in 1980. i like the movie a lot, but don't have much of a desire to own it, though i'd like to hear Ray's commentary. he did about 85-90% of the animation, according to film scholars.
Terry Moore also starred in an episode of the Batman tv show, playing a moll for the Joker.

MIGHTY JOE YOUNG, like KING KONG, was shown regularly in the Philadelphia area in the '60s when I was a kid. I love this film, and it brings back nice, childhood memories. It was included in the BestBuy KONG set I bought last fall. Great threesome really - KING KONG, SON OF KONG and MIGHTY JOE YOUNG. Ya get triple the amount of Robert Armstrong. Does anyone remember in the '80s, when WOR Channel 9 (the New York/Secaucus, NJ cable station) used to show all 3 films every Thanksgiving afternoon? That became quite a tradition in our house. In fact, last Thanksgiving we ran all 3 from the new box set for old time's sake.

Fun, fun movie. For those who diss the original "King Kong" in favor of Jackson's version because there was a "true" relationship between the girl and ape, well I would tell them to watch MJY, where that relationship was even better than in the new Kong, if that's what one wants to see. It is amusing that Willis O'Brien would finally get some recognition and get that well deserved Oscar, eventhough Harryhausen did around 90% of the stop-motion. Terry Moore also starred in an episode of the Batman tv show, playing a moll for the Joker. My Terry Moore moment was when she was sitting right in front of me (!) at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, and I didn't realize it was her, until she was told to come up in front of the stage for Q&A sessions. I then saw her last December as well for another showing of MJY. Two missed opportunities to ask her about Batman! Oh well, but it's great to hear Terry telling her experiences in MJY, and talking about Armstrong, and Ben Johnson, Merian C. Cooper, Ernest Shoedsack, Obie and Ray.
