Three young women are out for a ride, they meet three young men also having a drive. The guys challenge the girls to a race. On an old wooden bridge the drivers attempt to pass each others car. The car carrying the women goes off the bridge into the river and sinks like a rock. The river is so muddy that those searching for the car have little hope of finding it. The boys commit a lie of omission, telling the authorities that the other car tried to pass them but leaving out they were racing. Suddenly one of the young women, Mary Henry comes out of the water. She says she cannot remember the accident.
Later, Mary who has accepted a job as a church organist drives to Utah where here new job awaits. Mary looks at being at being a paid church organist as just a job though the organ manufacturer tries to tell that's not the right atttiude for a church organist. Anyway, as Mary nears her desitnation she passes an old carnival grounds. A strange man appears in her window. Later when Mary is in her rented room the man appears, unseen by Mary, outside her window. While she's at the church practicing the organ the man appears, again apparently not seen by Mary. Mary goes for a ride with the minister, who stops at the carnival to allow her to take a look. He won't go inside the grounds with her or allow her go in alone, however, as there are keep out signs posted. That evening Mary sees the strange man in the hall below her rented room but her land landy insists no one is there. Things get stranger after that. The next day while Mary is shopping for clothes the world goes silent (except for background music which of course Mary cannot hear), the sales lady that was helping Mary behaives as if Mary isn't there. When Mary tries to speak to other people they ignore her. When they talk to other people no sound escapes their lips. Outside the store a man is working a jackhammer but there is no sound. Suddenly, birds can be heard chirping. Mary's in a park, she bumps into that strange man, screams and runs away, running into a Dr. Samuels. When Mary looks back the man she's frightend of has been replaced by someone else. Dr. Samuels takes Mary to his office where she tells him about the accident and strange occurances since. He of course assums she's suffering from an over active imagination brought on by the shock of the accident.
Of course we don't know what Mary Henry was like before the accident, but after she's distant. She tells Dr. Samuel that she has no desire to have a man in her life or any need for friends. Which of course he finds odd.
Against Dr. Samuel's advice Mary decides to check out that old carnival grounds, alone....
I have Carnival of Souls on a $1 DVD with Circus of Fear (1966)
