The original Dark Shadows (1966) consisted of half hour episodes aired daily, started out in b/w (switching to color later), considered a gothic soap, took along time to complete a story line. The first episode of this remake runs for an hour and a half, the remaining episodes are an hour each. Dark Shadows (1991) is darker and faster paced than the original.
Victoria "Vicki" Winters accepts a job as a governess for the wealthy Collins family of the small town of Collinsport, Maine. This family has very dark secrets, including a "cousin" Barnabas Collins, who is actually a 200 year old vampire.
Like the original this remake features time travel into the past to show how Barnabas Collins became a vampire. However, there are differences in which characters from present resemble characters from the past. For example the original Victoria Winters was not a duplicate of Jossette du Pres, Maggie Evans was. This version was canceled before Quentin Collins, the werewolf could be introduced.
Ran on NBC, often preempted by reports on the first golf war, it was canceled after only 12 episodes.
Some changes in the characters:
Elizabeth Collins Stoddard: doesn't seem as strong willed or domineering as Joan Bennett's version.
Carolyn Stoddard more strong willed and independent than the original, doesn't like cousin David. I don't like this Carolyn.
Roger Collins is not as stuffy and old fashioned as the original but just as bossy at times. Having an affair with Maggie Evans.
Willie Loomis is the cook/housekeeper's nephew rather than an outsider, he's a drunk and not entirely rational (even before meeting Barnabas).
David Collins is a mischievous brat. Since I haven't actually seen the first 200 and some (pre Barnabas) episodes of the original I'm not sure how David was in the beginning of the original. In the Barnabas episodes of the original he's sometimes disobedient but not mean. This David needs a spanking.
Sam Evans runs the local tavern. In the original Sam's a painter who drinks too much.
Maggie Evans: works with father. Original worked in a cafe until she replaced Vicky as David's governess. This version is having an affair with Roger Collins, whose wife is in an asylum in England and according to Maggie is a witch.
Dr. Julia Hoffman: Barbara Steele is better looking than Grayson Hall and doesn't over act so much.
There are some new characters:
Daphne Harridge Collins: after Willie Loomis accidentally releases the vampire, Daphne falls victim to Barnabas two-hundred year old thirst. Joe Haskell is dating Daphne instead of Maggie Evans.
Professor Michael Woodard & Dr. Fisher: the original David Woodard was a medical doctor who came to suspect a vampire was on the loose. His character is split into two different men in this series., Professor Michael Woodard sort of a Van Helsing type and Dr. Fisher, a medical doctor who detects human saliva in the wounds on the vampire's victims. Professor Woodard is a friend of Julia Hoffman just as the original Dr. Woodard was.
Available on a 4 disc DVD set as "Dark Shadows: The Revival".
In 2002 Dan Curtis tried to get Fox to pick up a third version of Dark Shadows, he failed although there is a pilot episode floating around.
