The zombies in this are of the magically animated corpse variety not the flesh eating type.
People in a Cornish village are dying from a mysterious disease. Unable to discover the cause of their deaths the local physcian Dr. Peter Tompson sends for his medical school teacher Sir James Forbes. Sir James brings his daughter Sylvia, who wants to visit with her friend, who happens to be Dr. Tompson's wife and is showing signs of the disease.
Over a twelve month period twelve people have died, one a month. The townfolk blame the doctor for not saving them. The doctor blames the villagers for not allowing him to perform a postmortem in order to determine what killed them. They're just following the lead of Squire Clive Hamilton.
After opening a grave to peform an unauthorized autopsy but finding the coffin empty, performing an autopsy on Alice Tompson who was found dead on the moors and talking to the man suspected of killing Mrs. Tompson, Sir James comes to the conclusion that some one in the village is practicing a form of witchcraft called voodoo. When Sylvia Forbes is targeted sir James decides to go after the zombie maker.
Originally shown in London as a double billing with "Dracula: Prince of Darkness". The pair made double the money as usual for a horror movie opening night (January 9, 1966).
I rented the DVD from Netflix. The DVD features the English language version of the film and the French language version. The extras are a short documentary on Hammer films which seems to be part of a series, a trailer for The Plaque of the Zombies, and a trailer for the double billing of Dracula: Prince of Darkness and The Plaque of the Zombies, which includes a notice that boys entering the theatre will receive free vampire teeth and girls entering the theatre will receive free zombie eyes.
Probably one of the better zombie type films, although most of the zombies are not seen until the end of the film.
