Fahrenheit 451 (1966) not to be confused with that inferior work of fiction Fahrenheit 9/11
based on the novel by Ray Bradbury
directed by François Truffaut
stars
Oskar Werner as Guy Montag
Julie Christie as Clarisse/Linda Montag
Cyril Cusack as The Captain
451 degrees fahrenheit is said to be the temperature at which book paper begins to burn
In an unspecificed date in the future houses are all made of fireproof materials. Fireman do not put out fires, the start fires, to burn books which have been band. Books, according the the government make people unhappy and people who read books are antisociail, they don't conform. To be happy everyone must be just a like. So books are destroyed and those found in possition of books are "re-educated".
People are drugged, with stiimulates to keep them going in the day, then with depresents so they can sleep. The tv announcers address each other and members of the audience as "cousin".
Guy Montag is a fireman who is content doing his job until he meets a woman, Clarisse, who asks if he has ever read any of the books he burns. He intially laughs at the idea. It's his job to burn books not read them. He has better tings to do than read books. And reading books is illegal.
But, curriosity gets the better of him and one day he saves a book (David Copperfield) brings it home and reads it while he wife sleeps her drugged sleep. Thus begins his decent into "crime".
The open seqment of the movie has no written credits, the credits are heard as the camera shows all the television anttenas on all the houses.
The DVD includes a video of Bradbury talking about the book. He claims that "Fahrenheit 451" is his only science fiction story. "Martian Chronicles" for example, is a "greek myth".
A remake is in preproduction. I hope it never leaves preproduction.
