Warning from Space (1956) original Japanese title: Uchûjin Tokyo ni arawaru
Keizo Kawasaki - Toru
Toyomi Karita - Hikari Aozora/Ginko
Bin Yagasawa - No. 2 Pairan
Shozo Nanbu - Dr. Toro Isobe
Bontaro Miake - Dr. Kamura
Mieko Nagai - Taeko Kamura
Kiyoko Hirai - Mrs. Matsuda
Isao Yamagata - Dr. Matsuda
UFOs are seen over Tokyo. Aliens who look like giant starfish attempt to contact human scientists but their appearance just frightens people, so the Pairan's chief scientist takes on the form of a human female, in order to warn the humans that a rogue planet is on a collusion course with Earth.
I was surprised by the ending of this film. Based on early dialogue I expected that "Planet R" would turn out to be fiction, invented by the Pairans to get humans to use up all their atom and hydrogen bombs.
I don't know how accurate the English dubbing was otherwise but one line made no sense. When the alien asked where Dr. Matsuda was she was told he had been missing for over a month. That is absurd. First off a month was 25 more days then the Earth had and second the man could not have been tied up for a month, he'd have starved to death.
I didn't think much of the Pairan's appearance. They looked like what they were, men wearing cloth costumes. Even with that big eye in the middle of the chest they were not at all scary. The starfish monsters in Kikaida and Kikaida-01 were more realistic looking.
Warning From Space is available on DVD along with Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet (Russian) and Assignment: Outer Space (Itallian). The disc costs 7 or 8 dollars.
