Picked up the awesome DVD at Walmart for just $8.88! 20th Century Fox did a great job restoring this landmark film. Unbelievably clear picture and audio, plus lots of bonus material. If you love TDTESS, don't pass this up. This is my fav of what I feel are the top 3 early 50's sci-fi films. Now I just need to get THE THING and WAR OF THE WORLDS on DVD too.
One thing concerns me about getting it at that price though. Is it because it wasn't selling well and we're losing more and more of the fan base for classic films? Sure hope not.

I think I've seen it pretty cheap- maybe there are just a lot of them out there? I'll get it.

I think I have that in my Netflix rental queue. Along with War of the Worlds. Another one I like is The Forbidden Planet. Netflix lists it as "Very long wait and out of print". Meaning all their copies are reserved and they can't get any more.

I bet there will be a new release of FORBIDDEN PLANET sometime soon. The first one is pretty barebones, and they could at least get Leslie Nielson to do some commentary. That's pretty much what has stopped me from getting the disc.

This might seem very odd but has anyone else recognized the ALLEGORY in that film? I don't know whether this allegorical representation was pointed out first by a Christian preacher or not but the parallels are definitely there. In other words, the alien Klaatu symbolizes Jesus Christ while the robot Gort symbolizes Jehovah God. Because just as in the Bible, Jesus died and got resurrected, so did Klaatu get resurrected. And just as Jesus Christ was resurrected by Jehovah, so was Klaatu resurrected by the robot Gort. And to top it off, remember the words "Klaatu Borada Nikto"? Klaatu used those words to stop Gort from destroying Earth, the same as Jesus whose death on the Cross prevented God from destroying mankind. It would be interesting to find out who originated this interpretation. Is it possible that the Screenwriter had intended this during the scripting? I of course realize that the film was adapted from a short story by Harry Bates, and that there are differences between the Bates story and the movie. My guess is that the Christian allegory is Not found in the Bates story but from just the film. Has anyone read the Bates story and can point out the differences?

You know, I've just seen this movie for the first time about a month ago. And I friggin' love it! Easy one of the best science fiction films ever! Well, one of the best non-Japanese ones anyway!

C.S. Lewis said that its possible to make an allegory out of just about anything, but that you should not do so unless you know for certain that was the author's intent. You change the meaning when you allegorise what was not meant to be an allegory. Many so called Christians have made an allegory out of the first two chapters of Genesis and in so doing have rendered Christ's death meaningless.
I have The Day the Earth Stood Still and The Forbidden Planet on DVDs but still can't find the 1953 version of War of the Worlds.

i've read the original short story, and it's a little different than the movie- especially concerning Gort and Klaatu. so i couldn't say anything about the allegory, alledged or not.
as great a filmmaker as Robert Wise is, it seems to me that he would have to know what was being filmed. other than that, i agree with Zone- allegory is everywhere you want to see it. just ask Tolkein!
